Smelly dog issue

So my beloved dog does smell, well of dog she's not rolled in the unmentionable fox poo!

I'm aware that bath dogs can be bad for their skin etc. so what can/should I do to keep the doggie odour in check?

Eric goes to the groomer's every 6 to 8 weeks to be clipped and he goes for a bath in between and his hair and skin is lovely. I'd be tempted to send her to the groomer's and see how you get on. Pretty sure they use products that are kind to a dog's hair and skin.

Quite happy to bath her myself! Weekly baths it is then Grin

Ddog1 is considerably less smelly - skin, breath and less farty - since I changed to raw feeding

RandomMess · 13/04/2015 22:39

No farts and her breath isn't as bad as the cats (thank goodness!) she may not smell particularly bad but she loves her cuddles!

Food, without a doubt, as soon as I changed ddog from the food she came with from the breeder, she stopped smelling, coat became much softer (Symply).

I have changed her food several times in last 3 years and have always gone back to Symply as her coat returns to being beautiful and fragrant on it. Breath not so bad, but she does lick all sorts of crap, so god know what's in there!

Buy a good quality dog shampoo from pets at home and bath once a week/ fortnight that is what I do with my ddog as he sleeps on the bed and his skin and coat is great,
No problems with dry skin and his coat is shiny.

Frequent bathing isn't helpful for most dogs. The smell is likely to caused by something - where does it mostly come from and what is she fed?

RandomMess · 14/04/2015 10:37

Fed Royal Canin JRT, not sure just a general doggy odour - don't think it's particularly vile it's just not pleasant when she is such a cuddly dog! I was worried that bathing her would be an issue/not good for her.

Things to check for smelly dogs, skin, teeth, anal glands, ears, diet.

I try not to bath mine too often - once, maybe twice a year - as it does strip the natural oils from the coat, but regular, thorough grooming, including ears, teeth and nails, is a must to keep them clean and tidy. Lots of dogs are bathed regularly though and as long as they're not out in all weathers or leaping in and out of muddy ditches or rivers it doesn't matter as much that they're coat isn't as protected by natural oils. I would still say weekly bathing isn't a good idea though.

I don't know what breed your dog is, but double coated dogs can sometimes start to smell a bit funky if you don't groom regularly enough to remove the trapped fur and make sure air can circulate through the coat properly. So that's worth considering too.

Some dogs do just seem to be more smelly than others regardless, my older lad is far more doggy smelling than our younger boy, despite them both having the same grooming/hygiene routine.

She's a JRT :) doesn't like mess/cold/wet/mud and feels the cold so wears a coat for most walks!

Will try grooming her as she has a short constantly moulting coat I didn't realise it was necessary Blush

My dog had a very strong general odour. Now we are 6 weeks into raw feeding she is definitely not as pungent. I never wash her unless she has rolled in 'stuff'

moosemama · 14/04/2015 11:46

Something like a (soft rubber brush that strips out the dead hair) followed by a hound glove might help - it will also dramatically reduce the amount of fur she's drops.

If she wears a coat a lot anyway, bathing every 6 weeks to couple of months would probably be ok, most dogs that have to be clipped at the groomers are done that frequently.

Do check her ears as well though, as it's quite common for a nasty smell to be emanating from there - and next time you're at the vets, get them to check her anal glands.

moosemama · 14/04/2015 11:47

I do agree that raw feeding is one of the best ways to reduce general doggy odour. All mine used to be raw fed, but we no longer have the facilities to do it and I do notice the difference.

nellieellie · 16/04/2015 22:47

My dog has no smell, apart from a pleasant odour on his head (and sometimes a bit if a wee whiff if he's been careless with the leg cocking!). Think it is because he is raw fed. This stopped both smelliness and farting! He did get a bit smelly when he went to hydrotherapy, and the vet thought it was due to a yeast overgrowth as a result of the chlorine. She gave me probiotics and it cleared up.
