How well behaved is your dog?

Would they
1/ come back if called when chasing a cat, squirrel or rabbit?
2/ Ignore a picnic laid out on the ground unexpectedly at the top of a hill you are walking up?
3/ leave tempting food left on the kitchen counter if there is no one else in the room?
4/ sit when asked to, when you don't have a treat?
5/ wait for permission to eat their dinner if asked?
What breed/age are they and how much training have you done with them?

1/ come back if called when chasing a cat, squirrel or rabbit? We're on a farm and have cats so he doesn't chase. He gave chase to a large frog once, that wee'd in his mouth, so that solved that.

2/ Ignore a picnic laid out on the ground unexpectedly at the top of a hill you are walking up? Not a chance. I'm sure he would leave if told to though.

3/ leave tempting food left on the kitchen counter if there is no one else in the room?
We do this all the time, he never jumps up. It's a risk though. One of our cats is a different story.

4/ sit when asked to, when you don't have a treat? Always

5/ wait for permission to eat their dinner if asked? Always

Labrador, 6 months. We've done a lot of training but he is very very smart, it's usually just a case of saying no sternly a couple of times. We have been very lucky.

singinghinnies - my dog is a staffy-lab cross (a staffrador?) and he is the most good-natured gentle dog I have ever met.

My 3.5 yr old lurcher would do all except 1 and 2. There is not a hope in hell of him returning when there's even a sniff of a chase, and a picnic would be waaaay to tempting.

Which is why he only goes off lead in specific, isolated, empty fields.

IrianofWay - i know quite a few nice staffie's. I honestly think its their upbringing and the way they are brought up around other dogs as a pup which has a huge effect on what they will be like. I was totally ignorant and would never have choose to have one before her, my other ones half a staff and is fine with dogs as well but i got him at about 18mnths old, he has a lot of problems due to being in the pound and the hunting but luckily he's not dog aggressive so that's a bonus

Ooo-er... Yes all the dogs will come back, eventually after chasing a small furry. We haven't had many problems with picnics for the moment, apart from our oldie who can't help herself. All the able bodied dogs are all over all the surfaces eating anything available. We don't leave food out. Yes they all sit when asked treat or no treat. We don't often make them sit and wait for meals, but they wait when asked. Out and about I am often complimented on my 'well behaved' dogs Hmm. They are all collies, aged 17, 5, 3 and 4 months. I do take my training and behaviour seriously, but it's not my profession and we are all far from perfect!Grin

I have an 18 month old rescue Staffy and my answers are:
No, definately not to number 1 but absolutely yes to all the others, (unless number 3 was a juicy cooked chicken from tesco!!)
