How often do you wash your dog?

DPup has his hair cut every 8weeks or so at the groomers, but he does just adore a big muddy puddle. I don't want to wash him too often, I've read that it can be bad for their skin, but I don't want muddy paws everywhere! After a particularly dirty walk today, he was unceremoniously dumped in the bath and hosed down. What do you do?

myusername. tomato ketchup seems to get rid of the smell of fox poo Shock

Adarajames · 05/04/2015 13:09

Myusername - yes, tomato ketchup does the job for losin the awful smell, you can get special dog shampoos to do same job but costs
More!

Paws and bums washed after every walk, proper wash about every 2 weeks or as necessary if they've rolled in something disgusting/got very muddy. I use a very mild children's shower gel/shampoo, and neither of them has ever had any skin problems.
They are small (terriers) and go on all the furniture and on beds etc so they need to be reasonably clean.

Gymbob · 05/04/2015 17:39

ah yes forgot about the bum, have washed off the occasional cling-on. the muzzle also gets a wipe as he will snack on horse or cow shit if he thinks he can get away with it, and he has a beard so it clings. he also comes on the furniture and beds Shock

Bum washing, really Shock.

TheKitchenWitch · 06/04/2015 18:04

I put them both in the bath next to each other, and then, using the shower head, it's:

Front Paw, Front Paw, Front Paw, Front Paw
Back Paw, BUM, Back Paw, Back Paw, BUM, Back Paw.

They stand there with long-suffering expressions on their faces, but do lift the appropriate paw as its turn comes up :o

I do like a well trained dog kitchen Grin

My dog is small-medium size, short haired. I put a flask of warm water (drop of baby shampoo), a jug, j-cloth and 2 towels by the door ready for when we come back from a walk. I wipe him down, stand him on one towel and dry with the other. Takes less than 5 minutes, he likes it (especially the rub-down - I may get a kiss), and the house stays clean.

nooka · 07/04/2015 04:19

Our dog is basically self cleaning, he has a waterproof top coat and the mud just slides off it (onto everything else obviously!). He gets roughly two washes a year for general dogginess smell, plus more intense washes when he rolls in dead fish (bleurgh!).

dd is in charge of washing duties, the dog is not keen! It involves dd in her swinsuit and a bathroom covered in towels. After his bath the dog does zoomies all over the house and garden, and gets dry quicker than the towels.

He is some sort of retriever mutt, with the waterproof coat coming from his water spaniel(ish) mum.

mygrandchildrenrock · 07/04/2015 16:17

My dog rolls in dead fish too, has not met fox poo yet but I can't imagine it smells worse than rotting dead fish! She would eat donkey poo too but is good at 'leave' until it comes to dead fish!

We have a lab, so not particularly hairy and has a smooth coat. After every walk he gets a good dry/rub down with a clean towel (from our huge pile of dog towels). If his paws are particularly muddy they get a quick dook/rub in a jug we have and then dried off. This keeps him clean enough.

We give him a full bath 2ish times a year when/if he get a bit smelly.

honeyroar · 07/04/2015 22:34

We do our two labs once or twice a year if they're lucky, or if they've rolled in fox poo. They swim a fair bit too.

honeyroar · 07/04/2015 22:35

They've never been near a grooming salon. Sometimes I think I should take them for the pure chaos/comedy factor.

306235388 · 07/04/2015 23:00

Every 3 months or so when he gets trimmed. He's a cocker and he stinks sometimes. Anyone know why? I can never see any particular reason (ie fox poo) and his teeth are ok. He gets ear infections sometimes which really are boak worthy but even when they're clear he still smells very .... Doglike!

austenozzy · 07/04/2015 23:11

My lab goes in the sea most days and might get legs and belly hosed off if she gets muddy en route home. Seawater is ace for getting fox/deer/badger poo out, btw! 10 mins of fetch in the waves and it's all gone! She does like a roll in the sand, though, so half a beach often gets left in the car or her bed :-(

About once a month. Just bathed her this morning, in fact.
