Hi, my puppy had an op 8 days ago and has some disolving stitches, each time I take the cone off her head she licks the area constantly. when is it safe for the collar to come off? when the stitches are completely gone? I'm sure it must be healed now, it looks great but I can just see the edge of a stitch still in place. She's completely miserable with this cone on her head. Thank you

How long did the Vet say to leave the buster collar on for.
When my dog was neutered he hated the collar and I toke it off him as soon as he got home but he never licked at his stiches not even once he just wasn't interested, my father's dog who was also neutered the same time had to keep his collar on for about a week till he had healed enough as he just kept licking at the incision whenever the cone was off.
So I'd say along as it looks healed enough that her licking won't reopen the wound then it should be ok to take the collar off just keep checking that her licking hasn't reopened the incision.

Thanks, yeah I will just keep checking, It looks good I'm just worried she might pull or nibble at it because it's a pad on her foot so prob not very straightforward, I've been wrapping stretchy bandage on it for walks as they gave me a boot which was completely useless. vet didn't say when it may be safe to take it off and not worry about her licking it I might phone them and ask

Depending on the shape of pups face I've always found the inflatable collars so much easier than the big buster collars. They can get to food easier and play easier but still can't get to the wound.
If it's a breed with a long nose though they can get past them.

She's a cocker x springer and can get to it in the recommended size collar so she's in a massive one. She worked out how to squash the cone enough to get to it.

I asked the vet today they said don't let her lick too much and she's calmed down on the licking today. so the collar Is on less which Is great
