Sorry I know I'm always posting. Advice on dogs and food please. He's always begging. And steal some if he gets the chance. He's recently started to love his cage. Doesn't even whine if he's shut in. Until food comes out and he cries and cries. Tried ignoring him in/out of the cage. No difference. When baby is in highchair he knows if he jumps up he goes out of the room for a few minutes. He tries when my back is turned. Any advice?

Bumping for you because I have a similar problem, my 12 wk old puppy is food obsessed and has just smashed a glass whilst jumping up at the kitchen worktop. It smashed into 1000's of pieces and if I hadn't been in the kitchen he would definitely have cut himself.

I know I need to put food away and we have really tried not to feed him other than his own food or as part of training. But I'm nut sure it's realistic to never leave a glass out. I pull him down if he jumps up but don't think that's having much impact. Any ideas anyone?

I would put a Kong in the cage while you eat. Stuff with something hard to get out and yummy. Never give him food when he begs, ignore, ignore, ignore. For the kitchen a babygate maybe needed if he jumps up.

Dogs are scavengers. That's just the way they are. Don't allow any begging, you might have to shut them away at mealtimes and not engaging with them. A spray bottle filled with water can be handy for the whiners too. Not a water pistol though, that's a fun game Grin

My dog is 7 and although he has always begged he has started pinching food. I left him in alone the other day for 20 minutes and he got the butter off the counter carried it to the living room and obviously couldn't open it! Bugger looked mortified Grin it's my punishment for leaving him alone despite me being in the rest of the day!

Puppy has just nabbed a tub of cream cheese from the table and stuffed it down!! I am going to have to massively reeducate myself and my family/ We have an open plan kitchen diner which is where his crate is so seems to be the natural place for him to spend time but can't fence off the kitchen part. I might have to rethink things though.

Have to admire my dog's scavenging skills. He managed to silently lift the lid of an egg box that was on the counter, remove an egg and take it to his bed. I was in the kitchen with him and must've had my back turned.

It took me a few mins to work out what had happened when I saw it was missing. Dog sat on his bed looking innocent, I opened his mouth and the intact egg was in there. I took it out and ran it under the tap, wasn't even cracked.

Dogs are opportunistic food thieves. No real advice, but just that certain types are more excited by food than others. Spaniels love food - the smell sense probably has something to do with it.

Are some dogs naturally scroungers according to breed?

We are on our second dog and neither (different breeds) has ever scrounged for food or nicked anything. It can't be down to training as we're lackadaisical at best.

chocolatelife · 08/04/2015 20:46

i think labradors are pretty bad, and lurchers really bad.
my jack russell cannot reach the counter, she tries to though and begs only if it is somethign i normally treat her with, ie. carrot piece, so when i am chopping carrots she hears from a long way away and comes running in, but anything else, like eating supper, she does not scrounge, so perhaps in this case it is learned behaviour

My current pair are unrepentant thieves, so all food is kept well away from them. Their speciality is licking the butter and raiding the bin.

Previous dog was ever so good and wouldn't beg at all. I thought he was perfect but was fondly looking at some photos of us all at Christmas and his nose is surfing around the table and counters in the background of most. Clearly just learned to do it when my back was turned.
