Advice please - neighbour's dog

Fully prepared to be told it's none of my business, but I would appreciate an honest opinion.

Next door neighbours got a puppy for their kids at Christmas. French bulldog, male, got him at 8ish weeks (I think?)

Anyway. Neighbour's partner works 7-3ish, and neighbour was off work as her work was shut for a few weeks over Christmas/new year but now back to regular hours. When she is at work she leaves puppy in back yard, no shelter, food or water. This is sometimes for up to 5 hours. He is also not taken out for walks but neighbour opens back door, boots him into yard and doesn't let him back in. As a consequence the back yard is covered in dog crap and pee. About once every 2 weeks they make a half hearted effort to clean with a bucket of water.

Is this ok for a dog? He does get walked sometimes (by neighbour's son mostly) but is left in the yard nearly every day. I know because there is only a very low dividing wall between our gardens! The stench from dog poo is terrible and I feel bad for the puppy. He is out there barking now.

What do I do? Is this ok for a puppy to be left in his own crap?

No that's shit. If he's got no shelter, water call the RSPCA.

gruber · 30/03/2015 14:38

Thanks. I'll get onto them.

Please report it
Why people have dogs and treat them like this is beyond me!!
They are part of the family and should be treated as such

EasyToEatTiger · 30/03/2015 15:35

That is no life for a dog. The RSPCA can help and should be able at least to give advice and help about animal welfare.

MarcoPoloCX · 30/03/2015 15:45

Do they have a dog flap?

gruber · 30/03/2015 16:40

No, no dog flap. Today my neighbour was out between 9.15 and 2.15, the poor dog was outside for the whole time and like I said above had no shelter, food or water. I am making a formal complaint to the RSPCA.

I not a big fan of the RSPCA generally, but they should act if the dog is left without shelter, bedding food or water. The alternative is your local dog warden, but I have known some to just tell people to call the RSPCA, it depends where you live.

Poor little mite, why on earth did they get a dog if they were going to treat it like that? Sad

BurningBridges · 30/03/2015 21:38

Let us know how you get on gruber and well done for reporting.

gruber · 31/03/2015 17:10

Well I've had confirmation from the RSPCA that they received the complaint. Just wait and see I think now.

Good for you for doing something about it x

Owllady · 02/04/2015 11:21

I'd have reported too. You've done the right thing

HelpMeGetOutOfHere · 02/04/2015 11:24

poor thing. he definitely doesn't have a kennel? That's an expensive dog to leave outside as well. You'd have thought spending that much money on him he would have been treated like a king.

confusedandemployed · 02/04/2015 11:31

I reported my NDN last May for leaving her dog overnight alone. I was told that I needed to call back after 24 hours had passed because apparently that's the minimum amount of time before it is officially abandonment. Anyway, I did call back and was told an officer would go out to them in due course. As it goes the NDN returned about an hour later. However the RSPCA did make a visit and they must have educated her about not leaving the dog alone, because she hasn't done it since. They also called me back asking for an update since their visit, i.e. had I noticed an improvement in the dog's treatment and I was delighted to confirm that I had. Previously the poor thing was literally never seen outside. Since the visit the NDN was at least bringing her outside for a bit of sun and a sniff. Still no walks though Angry

I complained that the NDN's dog was left alone cooped up in the house, but had shelter and (presumably) water. Your puppy sounds like he's in a worse state.
I hope they get a bollocking from the RSPCA.

gruber · 07/04/2015 20:09

Well, the RSPCA inspector called last Thursday and was able to go in and see dog. Apparently NDN had been wedging their back door open with a plastic toy but it had been pushed over as too light to keep the door propped open. The inspector was nice enough to call me and update me, saying he had cautioned her re state of the back yard. I have to say, hopefully it has gone in as it has been noticeably cleaner (ie they actually washed down the decking and haven't let dog do its business outside again since). Also I think he must have been very tactful as they are still speaking to us so hopefully don't realise it was us. I think the nicer weather here has helped, the kids were playing in their back yard yesterday and today so hoping that is an incentive to keep it clean now. And hoping they remember about not propping door open with toys!

helpmegetoutofhere no, no kennel. And it is mid-terrace so no easy access but I do wonder at them leaving him outside where he is "grabbable"...

Oh good I'm glad things are a bit better. Let's hope they keep it up!
