How do you handle it? No walks for three weeks or walks on the lead in safe areas? Our girl has just started her first season and I am dreading three weeks of being at home with her.

In our case no personality change

We have two intact bitches.

Ddog1

Her first season was heavy everytime she stood up she left little puddles, second + season she's got cleaner and cleaner to a point you could miss a season of your not checking very well.

She becomes withdrawn from the other dogs when she's in season and a bit grumpy.

Ddog2
She's always been very clean and again you could miss her season. She becomes more mouthy to the other dogs when in season.

If both bitchesa are in season at once well then the crates come out for them rather than the boy.

Oh and walking we have a fully enclosed security gated section of land to use so we go there.

However there are filled fenced gated fields you can rent they can be costly in some areas or about £30 for an hour of sole use in others.

Sir in your shoes I'd choose to go the same way. Do it now while she's young and minus the heart issue, otherwise fit and not risk, like you say, an emergency situation when she's older.
Plus it also doesn't bear thinking about the extra strain on her heart IF she managed to escape or something and got pregnant then had to give birth.
My childhood dog was really a bloody brazen hussy when in heat - she'd try her hardest to get out and often succeeded even though we tried to stop her - she should have been spayed but that's another story.

Chatty I wish there was something like that here. I will have to take my girl outside, around other dogs when her season comes. I don't have an option for toileting. Walks should be okay as we go to the forest and rarely encounter more than 1 or 2 other dogs. Plus in the forest they must be on a leash and 99% of dog owners comply.
