Is there anything I can do to stop my dog barking like this?

My fog is fine being left home alone, (I've recorded him several times) he watches us until we're out of sight and then he lies in his bed and sleeps.

Until he hears the car approaching. Then he jumps up into the bay window, barking and whining until we get to the front door. The thing is, he's got a very big, deep bark. Neither of our next door neighbours have ever commented on this, the neighbour we're attached to will definitely be able to hear him (we are able to hear NDN turning light switches on/off!) but we suspect he's dead and the NDNs we're not attached to would definitely be marching straight round if they heard barking.

Is it possible to stop the barking? He doesn't do it if we approach the house on foot as obviously walking isn't loud like a car and there's no faffing about reversing onto the drive and straightening up etc so by the time he's realised what's happening and got excited we're already in the house.

I'd be more worried about who's turning lights on and off if your neighbour's dead...rofl.

If it's not bothering anyone and isn't lasting long, do you really need to do anything about it?

I can't think how to do anything without anyone being there, which I'm assuming means he wouldn't do it anyway?

TheCunnyFunt · 16/03/2015 10:38

That was an unfortunate typo Blush we suspect the neighbour is deaf :o

No, he doesn't bark if anyone else is home, he just whines like crazy! Even if it's DP coming home (dog and DP aren't exactly best buddies) he'll still whine and get super excited.

My thinking is what if the NDN can hear it and he does end up complaining? The barking does only last for 2-3 minutes at a time tops (a bit longer if I'm driving, takes me ages to get on the drive properly Blush )

I figured you meant deaf...but it was too funny to ignore, sorry, lol.

Could you leave him in another room, where he can't get to the window?

Owllady · 16/03/2015 11:52

Hahaha at suspecting the neighbour is dead. Haha. You've made my day :o

I'd also leave him in another room. The hall? Or where he sleeps at night?

Mrsjayy · 16/03/2015 12:01

Hehe loving your typos if your dog is just barking out of excitement and your neighbors are not bothered I would leave it my dog isn't a barker he barks when he hears dh and Dd coming into the street and when leaflets come through the door so I nevet stop him unless he gets to much I taught him shush he responds to that

TheCunnyFunt · 16/03/2015 12:46

We're open plan downstairs, the only room with a door is the utility room and tbh he'd probably moo howl if he was left in there. He doesn't take too kindly to being shut in anywhere, even when we shut him in the kitchen with a baby gate when he split his tail (the kitchen is completely wipe clean and we had new sofas which we didn't want covering in blood!). He chewed the gate handle Hmm

He sleeps upstairs in our room, but he's not allowed up there unsupervised as he'll raid the bin for tissues and sprawl all over our bed (I cannot abide hairy beds!). And our room overlooks the street and our drive so he'll still be able to hear/see.

I wondered why you were being so blase about your suspected dead neighbour! Grin

Boomf · 16/03/2015 19:41

It surely doesn't last more than minutes? Don't see the issue myself

Mrsjayy · 16/03/2015 20:13

I don't think it's an issue either dogs bark it's how they communicate he is just pleased to See you alll
