Would your dog be a good show dog?

DDog seemed to be interested in Crufts this year, I told her that I tried to enter her but as she was so perfect they refused as it wouldn't be fair on the other dogs.

The truth is she would be a shocking show dog.

  1. She wouldn't want the judges to touch her and would wet herself if they actually did touch her.
  2. She would definitely crap on the arena floor
  3. She is really stubborn and would most certainly just refuse to do any of the agility course. at the agility course,
  4. Would probably spend the whole time just crying to be picked up as she would hate being around the other dogs and strangers.
  5. She also hates being groomed.

DDog fell asleep during the showing bits but was absolutely fascinated by the agility

He would probably have made a very good showdog if we hadn't had him neutered - he loves attention and being made a fuss of and is perfectly behaved on the rare occasions he goes to the groomer.

He's a Pets as Therapy dog though so he gets to be adored by people and do some good at the same time which is probably adding more to the total sum of human/dog happiness Grin

GinBunny · 08/03/2015 23:31

Mine would

  1. Bark at the judges
  2. Bark at the other dogs
  3. Bark at the other dog owners
  4. Bark at the audience

He also hates being groomed and refuses to let anyone near his feet so he has really really long paw hair. Really long.
If there was a category for best skanky mongrel he would probably win.

Skivvywoman · 09/03/2015 07:30

I told dh I was entering mine next year his answer was maybe scruffs but not crufts..... The cheek of him

VivaLeBeaver · 09/03/2015 07:40

I've tried taking BastardDog to various fun village dog shows in an attempt to socialise him. He spends the whole time trying to fight, starting fights, took a chunk out a Huskie's coat once, threatens to bite the judge.....

FunMitFlags · 09/03/2015 07:48

Mine is stunningly handsome which would be very unfair on all the other dogs [grim]

However he hates all other dogs and his idea of hell would be to be in a confined space with 100s of other dogs.

CMOTDibbler · 09/03/2015 09:05

Ddog ignored Crufts entirely. He is rubbish at agility (wants to just run round the ring jumping things as he pleases), would be rubbish at flyball (would just run round tossing the ball in the air), but is a lovely mongrel of sighthounds.

Dpuppy loved watching Crufts, and might be good at agility/flyball. He's very eyecatching - we get stopped by people wanting to talk about him every time we are out - but would be licking the judge which might not go down so well Smile

murphys · 09/03/2015 09:11

Well DLabrador would only stand still if he were being mesmerized by a piece of meat dangling in front of him.

And if the judge gave him a rub over and she happened to rub "his spot" he will break out in his one legged dance move, and he would be sure to fall off his box.

Dpup - well we wouldn't even get her to stay on said box...
I think she would win personality of the year Wink

TheHappinessTrap · 09/03/2015 09:17

My ladies are total luvvies. They adore being groomed for the extra personal fuss. However one would be terrified of everything and would whinge cry loudly constantly in til syne could find something to hide under ams the other is too elderly to do anything other than sit in a stately position sniffing everyone good naturedly.

atonofwashing · 09/03/2015 09:22

My parents elder springer would win categories for
1 dog fastest under the kitchen table when the door bell goes off. Yes dad, money well spent on that gun dog ??

2 first dog to wee with excitement all over the kitchen floor when we turn up. Again, money well spent on a gun dog.

Dd2 - springer.
She's very butch, so maybe
Best dog about to come out of the closet?

Our own dd sadly no longer with us, is currently winning best in show at the rainbow bridge. Go girl!

CandyAppleFudge · 09/03/2015 09:28

No, they'd both be looking at starting a fight with everything, one of them would sit down and refuse to move and the other would be trying to steal food off of people. Hmm

CalamityKate1 · 09/03/2015 09:38

Not showing, no. She hates being groomed for a start.

Also, immediately on the judge putting their hands on her she'd go soppy eyed and collapse slowly onto the floor, begging for a tummy rub.

We used to compete in obedience - she won her first class and was second in the next one but did disgrace herself a bit in that one because she actually ran out of the ring in between exercises to see the DCs who were ringside.

The judge very kindly turned a blind eye because she wasn't actually doing an exercise.

We ended up in a run off for first place with another dog and I sent the DCs off for a burger, figuring that if they weren't around she'd concentrate. Bad idea because she spent the whole heelwork bit looking around for them.

motmot · 09/03/2015 10:35

Great thread. I actually think our pointer is a pretty good example of her breed (maybe a touch short) but she would bark like mad at other dogs and lean affectionately against the judge.

Koalafications · 09/03/2015 11:53

Oh I love hearing about your DDogs.

It's also reassuring to know that your dogs wouldn't be great show dogs, either!

insanityscratching · 09/03/2015 12:07

Eric would be hopeless in the ring, he'd let the judges check him over but would then lie on his back for a tummy rub. He'd probably be ok being walked round the ring until he spotted something he wanted to check on and would then head in that direction or stage a sit down protest. It would be miraculous if he stayed well groomed long enough to look presentable as he's attracted to anything dirty or smelly.
I did think he'd like the agility course but he'd only do it in the order he fancied, he'd get the ball on flyball and run off with it and the obedience test would be a non starter tbh.
I think Crufts is safe from Eric for the considerable future.

tomandizzymum · 09/03/2015 12:30

It would depend how much meat I could bribe him with. His his tail gets so out of control that not only does he whip his own head with it, but there is usually a trail of tail destruction with him and his enthusiastic tail at the end of it. Picture a few small breeds on the floor, people on their knees boxes turned over and a slobbering labrador in the middle of it all.

He'd also be crap at flyball, labrador 'retriever' when he feels like it.

Chattymummyhere · 09/03/2015 18:31

Ddog 1....

Not a crufts dog she won't stack and hates you lookin at her end

Ddog 2...

Stacks nicely, very obedient would do well

Ddog 3...

Stacks nicely, well behaved... Might try and pee on other dogs though, would not win in uk, would in Germany

ClaimedByMe · 09/03/2015 18:38

Ddog would terrorise every dog within a 5 mile radius so would win everything as she would be the only dog left!!

With her stunning features of-
One eye
massive scar on her leg
teats that trail the ground
slightly massively over weight
bald patches
warts
skin tags
A fatty lump
A damaged ear so her ears go in different directions

I think she could win.

Oh and the only exercise she does is sofa aerobics!

turdfairynomore · 09/03/2015 18:52

My "favourite child" would be .....gorgeous, but dim!! She's a very beautiful 8 year old Yorkshire terrier who has never been clipped, has a coat that trails on the ground, wears a ponytail with a range of seasonal bows and is groomed to perfection at least twice a day by my mum who "dog sits"! But....she's not got much space for a brain. She'd bark. And pee! She likes to pee in new places! She'd bark a bit more. And she'd poo-and try to eat it. Then she'd bark! And she loves her lead but she likes to hold it in her mouth while she's walking and l don't think that showing technique has caught on yet!!

CaTsMaMmA · 09/03/2015 18:53

Kelly would love the attention, he makes out he is a grumpy old git, but he adores people talking about how handsome he is.
Depending how cooperative he was being for grooming would either mean he was immaculate, black sleek wirey coat, or maybe like a badly stuffed exploding mattress as his undercoat works its way out in tufts.
He would look at you with his deep amber eyes and according to how smart you looked would either sneeze in your face, or shimmy a long stretch of gsd drool up your leg.

Zac would look you up and down and either stand in a melty pool of shyness right behind me...have you seen a giantly fluffy GSD try to hide behind the deceptively slender legs of a middle aged woman?? We'd probably win best comedy routine right then and there.
If he decided you were a straight up and down person he would introduce himself to you, moult hair everywhere and be your best friend forever until someone else showed him a tennis ball.

Koalafications · 09/03/2015 19:17

Gosh, claimedbyme you have really sold your DDog well there. A strong contender for Best in Show for sure!

OP posts:
ClaimedByMe · 09/03/2015 19:22

Did I mention she is a staffie and has the customary staffie farts?

Would your dog be a good show dog?
OttiliaVonBCup · 09/03/2015 19:23

Dog 1 will win because he's beautiful.
Dog 2 will get the sympathy vote.

Koalafications · 09/03/2015 19:27

Aww, Claimed! What a cutie. Have you had him since he was a pup or was he a rescue?

OP posts:
GemmaTeller · 09/03/2015 19:31

Boy boxer would win most handsome features and longest trails of dog bubbles.

He does not like anyone trying to stoke his head and keeps moving his head out of the way in an exaggerated way.

He would be totally overawed to be in close proximity of so many other dogs and it would be 50/50 whether he starts a fight or takes up another dogs offer of one.

He will sit, lie down and wait with a treat in front of him and go cross eyed looking at the treat

throckenholt · 09/03/2015 19:36

mine are similar to OP.

One would probably wet herself. Both hate being groomed. One would be a nervous wreck - too many people, too many dogs - she would bark herself stupid.

I think they would both love flyball if trained - but are more likely to make up their own rules Grin
