My dog had necrotising pancreatitis, now he can barely walk - wtf is going on?

Hi is anyone around who can comment on this, its been one thing after another. DDog aged 5 went in for a biopsy due to constant diahorrea, 28 hours later developed necrotising pancreatitis and was at deaths door for a few days, then he rallied, came home 10 days post op and has been fed on special powdered formula, scrambled egg and the odd bit of fat free cottage cheese. He's been home nearly 2 weeks now, very cheerful and back to his old self but I noticed his back legs were weak, thought it was just post op you know it was so hard for him so no wonder he is tired.

Yesterday morning came down and he was limping/refused to eat. Took him to vet, couldn't find anything wrong. half an hour later he got worse so took him back, vet gave painkillers and took bloods, all clear. Everyone confused. We carried him out to the car just because we'd forgotten his lead, but then on arrival at home found he couldn't actually walk. Couple of hours later, he was lying totally unresponsive shaking and whining unable to move. We thought that was it.

This morning its been a roller coaster. One minute he can't walk at all, next he looks interested in stuff, then he's crying with pain, then he's looking for a walk. I am feeding him by hand, he won't take the formula, although he is still drinking. Vet is opening surgery at 5.30 to assess him but how on earth can this be resolved happily? Surely pancreatitis doesn't affect his legs?

I've got nothing constructive to say except I'm so sorry that your poor dog has got even more problems x

BurningBridges · 08/03/2015 16:18

Hi Floral, thank you.

Its a mess isn't it. I've been researching and it may be that he has developed diabetes as that will then cause neuropathic problems. Am seeing vet later. There are no answers really are there. DD2 (11) is adamant he is going to get better - she thinks if the dog was PTS I would simply be murdering him as I was too mean to pay for treatment, she just cannot cope with it.

Any news ?

BurningBridges · 08/03/2015 22:01

Yes, went to vet, by which time he was walking a lot better (well, any walking at all has to be an improvement). Vet still thinks its pancreatitis and therefore can be treated with what seems to be a constant stream of changing drugs both injected and oral. So anyway he had some injections, we took him home and he was pacing for a couple of hours, I pretty much forced him to eat some of his special "baby milk" food, and then finally about 20 minutes ago he laid down, so 2 and a half hours after all the drugs. He's got diahorrea again, which was where all this started some 7 months ago.

I said to the vet today we need to talk about what to do if the time comes and we have to have him put down and he seemed very shocked as if he was sure DDog would be ok. But i am not sure that our version of ok is the same. If dependent on drugs and liquid food which have to be administered by hand 3 times every day, if he has these terrible relapses every few weeks, then is that OK enough? Anyway, at this precise moment is asleep and ok. Thanks Floral. Flowers

It's so difficult when they can't tell you how they actually feel and it does eventually have to come down to quality of life ,I hope he is feeling better tomorrow .

LetThereBeCupcakes · 09/03/2015 07:57

Hi OP - how is DDog today? So sorry you're going through this. Were you able to discuss diabetes with your vet or was he / she just adament it was pancreatitis?

BurningBridges · 09/03/2015 13:24

Hello again, well, vet says its not pancreatitis come back, he reckons its enteritis. I think he is just, literally, reading the entrails. More drugs and more tests today. DDog wasn't too bad before that but by the time he'd been at the vets for an hour he was very low.

I've had to force feed him some of his special formula and he's sleeping now. I asked the vet what the prognosis was, he reckons that this will keep happening every few weeks until we get the drugs/food right. We are having a look at the costs involved. When DDog wakes up I have to feed him again plus administer 3 tablets and a liquid.

Suppose I'd better squeeze in some work too! Thanks for listening everyone.

Oh, poor lad and poor you :( I hope the vet gets to the bottom of it quickly.

BurningBridges · 10/03/2015 09:31

Looks like that's it today, waiting to hear from vet. No more interventions for my baby.

I am so sorry. What a terrible time for your dog and family.
For what its worth I am not sure I could subject my little man to never ending tests and drugs. Kinder to do the heartbreaking thing.

spiderlight · 10/03/2015 13:48

So sorry :(

BurningBridges, PLEASE, stop everything! I have been through this multiple times. I would stop everything. No meds, no cheese, no powdered food, or anything you are doing now, I would stop it. Give your dog 24 hours of rest without food. I strongly advise you never to force-feed your dog; it will worsen things. Vets help, but they don't always have the answer. I would give water with a syringe every hour if your dog doesn't drink to keep him hydrated. The basic reason is that when dogs get dehydrated, they start to feel nauseated and have many other issues. The next day in the evening, I would give him a bone broth (make sure to remove the fat layer) and give them one portion per day for a week until he shows signs of feeling better. This is where you can start adding solid food—boiled chicken without the skin BEFORE boiling it. It's recommended to add a little digestive enzyme. Adding dandelion leaves in small quantities is suggested once you give solid food, but I would stick to one protein only and a real one. No kibbles, no canned food, the real one, and NO fat at all for a month at least. Cheese is way too fat, even the low-fat one. Your dog seems to have issues with fat, the same as mine, and the meds made things worse, in my opinion. You forced him to eat and give med over med. It's not your fault that your vet prescribed medication for your dog. However, your dog's body needs a break and should restart slowly. Good luck, my dear :)

SoPawlicious · 27/03/2024 08:35

BTW, diarrhea means the food you were giving him was not working with him, so you need to skip it.
