My pup has only one testicle. Anyone have any experience?

Well my border terrier pup broke his leg recently. Whilst under the GA the vet noticed he had only one testicle. The vet has told me that he will have to be castrated (we were planning to anyway) as there is a risk of cancer. Does a castration for a dog with a testicle in its abdomen differ from normal castrations? Anyone who has any experience of this is very welcome. TIA

So is one undescended? Friends dog had both undescended and needed them removing. It was all pretty straightforward and he recovered quickly, so don't worry about it. It is more complex than a bog standard castration, but less major than spaying a a bitch.

Yes sorry it is undescended. He has really been through the mill lately.

They will have to make an incision into his abdomen to find it so is different to a regular castrate. The after care won't be very different though and he should be fine. It is a fairly common procedure.

Thanks. That puts my mind at rest. He is still recovering from a broken leg so it has been a worry on top of that.

It's usually fairly straightforward if the testicle can be felt in the groin area, but if it can't there will be some searching, which might require a larger wound (& possibly another incision) and entry into the abdomen (therefore, similar and sometimes slightly more invasive than a bitch spay). It will probably be more expensive due to additional surgical time, so make sure your vets give you an estimate.
