Was out running with him. He was about 5 ft behind me and keeping pace. We were on a quiet road with a wide verge and pavement and very little road traffic. A man came past me the other way with two snarly dogs on a lead and Harley ran out into the road to get away. I didn't see it happen, first thing I heard was an animal screaming. He was able to stagger towards me. The man with the dogs said he didn't think that car went over him and it was just a glancing blow. The driver was a woman and very upset and apologetic - but it wasn't her fault. She gave us a lift home and I rang the emergency vet who asked lots of questions but said it didn't sound as if anything too serious had happened. Told us to look out for breathing difficulties and check to see if he was urinating freely and that was no blood in it, and to call again if we saw either of those things.

He was walking, eating and drinking but very quiet and he was clearly in pain when he tried to go up the stairs.

DH and I took shifts sitting with him all night. Took him to the vet this morning who spent ages looking him over, feeling everything and listening to his chest. Said it was almost certainly just bruising with no broken bones and no internal injuries but we must keep a close eye on him and take him back if he deterioriated. Got some anti-inflammatories and a check up on Saturday.

Sad Poor dog. It's only been two weeks since he was there with a cut on the tongue. He's lying on a sleeping bag in front of the fire right now. No more running with me for him.

I haven't eaten anything since. I can see it all happening whenever I close my eyes.

Poor old thing and what a shock for both of you. Cake and cuddles is what you both need.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 04/03/2015 14:34

Oh my gawd what a shock. Poor old dog. Bollocks to waiting and seeing though, I'd be at the vets having everything scanned and xrayed. Hope he's ok. Flowers

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2015 14:46

Flowers Poor Harley, and poor you. Hope you both feel better soon.

IrianofWay · 04/03/2015 15:06

Thanks everyone.

He seems fine and very comfortable snuggled up in front of the fire. I just has another weep and a cup of tea and am feeling better.

Aww poor baby Hmm

ender · 04/03/2015 16:33

Glad he seems to be OK so far.
Was he on a lead and managed to pull away from you?

IrianofWay · 04/03/2015 16:50

No not on a lead. I can't run with him on a lead - which is why we were running on what I thought was a safe road. I've been doing this with him for 2 years plus and he has always been so reliable so far. But as I said earlier no more running for Harley.

Hope he an you feel better soon...

Have you looked at walking belts? Most people I know who run with dogs use those so their hands are free.

ErrolTheDragon · 04/03/2015 18:07

That's a shame. I suppose there's no suitable off-road tracks you could use? My dog doesn't like running, but I did try it with him along a canal towpath. We'd walk to and from with him on the leash.

But if there isn't then you're right not to risk it - especially as this incident may have unnerved him.

Owllady · 04/03/2015 18:13

Please don't run on the road with your dog off lead if he is nervous or reactive to things
I'm really sorry about what has happened and I know what a shock it is as one of my dogs has been hit by a car (totally not her fault) but if you want to run with your dog run in a park, through fields or train it to be on lead on a road/pavement if it's so flighty so you can keep control of him if something like this happens again.

I'm not judging you, we all make mistakes, but take this as a warning.

I hope you are okay

Owllady · 04/03/2015 18:15

Sorry I missed your no more running post Blush

IrianofWay · 04/03/2015 20:36

He is normally so sensible. If we are walking on a road witjout pavements he automatically pulls into the side when a car approaches. In the past he has been a bit flighty about odd things but not for over a year hence why I risked a 'safe' road instead of just the canal and/or footpaths

You've been lucky x

honeyroar · 04/03/2015 21:52

I'm sure you've had a shock and are upset, and that you have learned your lesson, and will never put him in that situation again, so I just say give him a cuddle and thank your lucky stars.x

Skivvywoman · 05/03/2015 12:24

Is Harley feeling better today?

IrianofWay · 05/03/2015 12:47

Yes thanks skivvymum. He is limping a little but eating, drinking and playing as normal. I can't beleive how lucky we were.

Skivvywoman · 05/03/2015 12:55

Aww that's great news, don't dwell on the past you will be more upset than him Hmm he's better and that's the main thing Smile

Jackie0 · 05/03/2015 13:00

Always always always use a lead.
I'm sorry I know you feel awful as it is. Thank goodness i t wasnt worse.

ancientbuchanan · 05/03/2015 13:21

Happened to us on Christmas Eve. Dog hit and under wheels. Took to vet, who said keep an eye, and gave pain relief. If there was any muddy water, keep an eye esp on the eyes.

Dog shaken up for a fortnight, grazes took longer, scar still there, and he's now more nervous. Bangs, cars etc. And needs lots if reassurance. But he was nervous to begin with.

It's taken us ages and we were a mixture of weep and anger and shakes for some time.

Hope both of you recover soon. Lots and lots of cuddles/ hugs.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 05/03/2015 14:28

Glad he's ok. Flowers

TheHappinessTrap · 07/03/2015 10:23

That would have left us shaken up too. Hope you're getting lots of good dog cuddles today.

Poor boy, hope e feels better soon. I'd give him (and you!) rescue remedy, seems to help mine / many traumatised fosters we have so worth a go to get him over the shock / fright. You can also give dogs arnica, both for bruising and shock, again, seems to have helped mine x

IrianofWay · 07/03/2015 19:13

The driver didn't see him so no chance to swerve. However I take the point.

He went back to the vet today for a check up- doing well! But vet said he was overweight so... diet for Harley. He also told us that he probably shouldn't be running as far as I take him so I don't feel bad about stopping running with him...but of course that will put more weight on him
