Would a pup/dog scare away the mice???

Yes, I know ... strange question... I'm assuming the answer is yes but wanted to check as we're over run by mice at the moment and I can't bear the idea of a little pup being at risk from mouse poison..... hate using mouse poison too but realise its essential for next few weeks as we've old victorian houses with interconnecting cellars and all my neighbours either have mice or cats! we're getting a puppy to replace our old cat (recently departed) in a few weeks/months....

I wish our dogs would of but no they didn't, but the little monkeys avoided poison and we had to get someone in to get rid of them Hmm

MissMuffetisin · 28/02/2015 12:45

You know the answer really - you need another cat !

daisydotandgertie · 28/02/2015 13:01

TBH, you need to get rid of the mice before you have a very young pup. The risk of transmission of leptospirosis would worry me greatly if you are really overrun by mice.

The pup won't be protected from the disease until both vaccinations have been completed. It is a life threatening disease for young puppies and the risk is very real.

Get the pest people in ASAP.

And a dog won't deter the mice, far less a puppy. Unless of course it's a working terrier.

I've had mice in the house despite having a cat and four dogs one of which was a JRT. I wouldn't be relying on the puppy.

Booboostoo · 28/02/2015 14:01

P.S. The vaccine for lepto only covers one of many versions but it is quite difficult to catch lepto, you have to ingest it and it only survives in wet conditions so your pup would have to drink water contaminated by lepto infected rat urine to get it.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 28/02/2015 14:02

I've heard they're better than cats at keeping them away but not sure how true this is

Adarajames · 28/02/2015 14:07

Use peppermint oil to get rid f nice, they hate it! Best thing is make sure no food is left accessible on work surfaces, any food in floor level cupboards needs to go in sturdy lidded secure plastic crates / containers, block as many access places as possible (wire wool in jokes where radiator pipes come through floor etc, but don't block air bricks / vents, cover with fine wire mesh instead) and use peppermint oil in spray surface / floor cleaners and also splash it around cupboards / corners / gaps until place smells like giant humbug! I've managed to keep them away by doing all this alth can still here them under floorboards of upstairs flat, i no longer get evidence of them being in mine. Oh and I've 2 dogs including one that obsessively follows their noises / scent and will try and catch if sees them, but that alone hadn't detured them!

We have a Victorian terrace house too and as soon as our cat died we were overrun with mice. The only thing that has worked - and it's been working for months, perfectly - is one of those plug in things that emits sounds that scares them off. I expect that would affect a puppy too though

tabulahrasa · 28/02/2015 15:18

Dog and two cats...still get mice. Both cats hunt outside, just clearly not in the house, gits, lol

loraflora · 28/02/2015 15:34

After my first cat died I didn't have any pets for four years. That was the only time I had mice in the 15 years I've been in my house. I haven't seen any since I had another cat. That said, I don't live in a Victorian terrace and I blocked up every hole I could find around the house, too.

Lonecatwithkitten · 28/02/2015 16:45

Boo your advice is dated all canine lepto vaccines protect against two strains and the most recent vaccine protects against four strains which covers 85% proportion of the worldwide serovars and a higher percentage of UK strains.
But yes to control the mice you need a good cat.

Apologies the new vaccine is not available in France so I didn't know about it
