So very excited but so very nervous at the same time. First time owner, but grew up around dogs.
Good advice please! What do I need to know. Also best way to introduce him to my two cats?

I all of a sudden feel really clueless! Aahhh!

Join the dog Training Advice and Support (?) facebook group and read their files at the top. It's a modern, science based page answered by professional trainers-no pack or dominance nonsense. He might not be housetrained, so read the puppy files, he might be nearing the teenage stage, as well as the upheaval he'll have been through being in rescue as a baby, the wee pet, so be patient with him, and give him tonnes of cuddles and take loads of photos!

Well done you! Smile often whenever rescue dogs you need to think of them as much younger than they are from lack of training / stability etc; alth if is coming from a great foster home then not such as issue.
My first thing with all my fosters is crate training them! Saves on shows / walls / cables etc as can't get themselves into trouble when not being watched! Grin Gwen Bailey books great for overview, Perfect Puppy book great even for an older rescue. See if you can find a good dog training class nearby, helps to talk to other owners, socialise your pup and working together helps strengthen bond with you. I'm very puppy broody at moment so envying you somewhat! And enjoy! Most important bit of all Smile

Congratulations !

I have a rescue dog who was 18 mths when I got her. I was advised to buy a lunge lead (from eBay) & have it attached if she chased my cat.

Make sure your cats have escape routes & somewhere safe - I expect if your pup gets too close, they'll whack him on the nose. My cat is higher in the pecking order ! Also when cat came & rubbed her face along dog, I'd say good girl (providing she was being good !).

Being only 8mths, you'll probably be ok, after the initial interest dies off.

How are you getting on with your dog? I got a rescue dog 3 years ago and it was enormously hard for a year. Now I am happier than ever. He is however very far from perfect and the reactions of others- he's a staffy- are the biggest challenge.
My advice - do some dog classes, stay calm, read a lot, socialise loads, get a dog walker for when/if you work
Hope things are working out for you

Oh and I've 3 cats who can't abide him but they live together ok. He's too boisterous for them

We found a stair gate at the bottom of the stairs allowed the cats to escape/observe from a safe point until they got braver. Try and have the cats on your knee in the evening and let the dog have a sniff but make it stay on the floor. It will take a while, especially with a bouncy dog, for the cat to feel confident, just keep making a fuss of the cats.

Best of luck, hoping it all settles soon and you have a great time with your new dog.
