What can I give my dog to help his upset tummy?

I have a male poodle he's 18 and has the runs terribly.
He hasn't eaten anything unusual apart from theliver sausage he stole Angry which I'm guessing is far too rich.

He has a growth on his anus and the wiping is making him sore.

Would cheese work?

Pumpkin baby food helps our two here.

Fatstacks · 24/02/2015 17:37

I was just reading up on that Demons thanks.

He hasn't any teeth so the driest food he can eat is semi moist.

We were given this by the vet when dpup had the runs, you can buy it in pets at home I think. It seemed to help her.
Hope he's feeling better soon x

CuddlesAndShit · 24/02/2015 17:42

Wow, he's 18??! That's amazing!

I personally would just give him plain boiled rice and chicken, nice and easy for his tummy and teeth (maybe cut the chicken up very small)

lemisscared · 24/02/2015 17:42

please don't give him cheese! that is high fat and will make any diarroeah worse. I would starve him until tomorrow and then give him bland food such as chicken and rice for the next few days. If it doesn't get any better then he may need to see the vet.

Fatstacks · 24/02/2015 17:51

Ok no cheese, he looks disappointed but it serves him right.

I can lift his food and give him rice for breakfast.
Hopefully it will firm him up.

I'm reluctant to see the vet, he has a couple of lumps and bumps that they are keen to operate on but the last growth he had removed took him ages to recover from.

I thought he wasn't going to survive but he did eventually perk up.

Cuddles he is decrepit now Grin tottering around like Bambi but still managed to jump and steal from the counter even with his arthritis!

I give Bob martin anti diarrhea tablets they seem to help.

lemisscared · 24/02/2015 17:59

oh, thats annoying fatstacks - i tend to agree with you re the lumps, especially at his rather fantastic age. The vets should respect your wishes regarding this - unless they are highly malignant leave them be, but even if they are - he is 18!! Definately no ops!

In a very similar situation with my mums dog, although he is only 10, he is a patchwork of lumps, has a heart condition and we have just discovered a mass on his spleen. I wont be letting them operate on him unless there is risk of rupture. He has had loads of lump removals and they just come back.

CuddlesAndShit · 24/02/2015 18:05

Bless his heart.

I have visions of him being the doggy version of Andy from Little Britain when your back is turned now Grin

Fatstacks · 24/02/2015 18:25

lem he is too old for anything other than emergency ops, it sounds cruel but he gets so stressed that the lump removals cause more upset than the lumps!
He likes to watch tv in front of the fire peacefully he only has two walks a week now I hate how they default to the extreme treatment.

We call him borderforce Cuddles after he stowed away in a woman's car at Christmas.
She drove 12 miles without realising she had picked up a stealth poodle at 5am
God knows how he got through his doggie door we move his ramp at night!
I may have rung 999 after 2 hours searching for him, now convinced he had been dog napped and used as bait Luckily the lady reported it to the 101 number and he was the only poodle in a blue sweater missing Grin

That is hilarious fat reminds me of that ww2 veteran who ran off to attend the d-day commemorations in France.

CuddlesAndShit · 25/02/2015 11:00

Haha, that's brilliant! What a character, he sounds totally fab Smile

BareFacedKitty · 25/02/2015 16:13

Scrambled egg always helps mine when the other rice/pasta options fail! Sounds like quite the character, one of mine is half poodle and the smartest dog I've ever known!

Lonecatwithkitten · 25/02/2015 19:52

Current recommendations are to keep feeding regular food as starving and changing to bland diet means the gut has to change again when regular food is reintroduced.

Fatstacks · 26/02/2015 08:47

He seems to have firmed up.
I tried him with rice and pumpkin baby food but he just licked all the pumkin off.
Rice on toast for lunch (he loves his toast and butter and is slightly underweight) and rice with his meat for tea.

He's a brighter and even got up for the one show last night Grin
I'm skipping his walk today (will take him for a drive instead he loves the car) he still looks wobblier so let him regroup!
Thanks guys Smile
