why has my dog started bum shuffling?

I have a 9 month old Frenchie who has in the last few days started to suddenly sit down indoors and out and shuffle along on her bum!

Its as though she is trying to scratch it. I have looked and there doesn't seem to be anything wrong.....visible to the untrained eye. I have cleaned with water and cotton wool, but she is still doing it.

Help! Has anyone come across this before?

Worms or do her anal glands need doing?

fridayfreedom · 21/02/2015 08:35

Not a dog owner but I think they do it when they have problems with their anal glands

Fairylea · 21/02/2015 08:35

Worms I would say.

Lonecatwithkitten · 21/02/2015 08:37

Top of the list anal glands.
Next worms.

Camsie30 · 21/02/2015 08:38

Itchy bum

PassTheCremeEggs · 21/02/2015 08:42

Do you ever get an odd (repulsive) fishy/metallic smell in the room when the dog does it? If so it'll be the anal glands. A vet will sort them out.

Chocrock · 21/02/2015 08:43

thanks all!
So how do I work out whether its worms or anal glands?
I will get some worming tablets today - any recommendations?
Anal glands -I have no idea about this, what do I do, how do I check if that is the problem?

pass I haven't noticed the smell you describe

As I understand it anal glands usually empty themselves when the dog does a poo. Sometimes this doesn't happen and they need to be emptied manually - usually by a vey squeezing them. Dogs shuffle like that because they itch and are full. Some dogs are prone to problems with them - our lab needs them doing quite regularly. You'll only smell the smell if some of the fluid comes out while your dog shuffles - just because you can't smell it doesn't mean there isn't a problem. A vet will sort it very quickly, although your dog might be quite shocked!!

ireallydontlikemonday · 21/02/2015 10:18

Anal glands for sure. The vet will sort it in ten seconds - they have to 'manually evacuate' them. Absolutely grim but only takes a few seconds.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/02/2015 10:21

Anal glands or worms.

ThatBloodyWoman · 21/02/2015 10:22

I'd get some carpet shampoo btw Wink

Sparklepup · 21/02/2015 10:27

Try Milbemax (think that's how you spell it) from the vet - about £6, and then worm every 3 months. Would clean carpets and bedding etc too to be on the safe side

SukieTuesday · 21/02/2015 10:28

What wormer are you using now?

AliceInSandwichLand · 21/02/2015 10:31

Lonecat is a vet and so am I. Almost certainly anal glands, worms less likely. Would strongly advise getting your vet to have a look and empty them if need be - it only takes a minute and she will feel much better afterwards!

Chocrock · 21/02/2015 11:06

Thanks.
I will get some wormer tablets today and make an appointment at the vets next week. I assume this isn't an emergency vet situation?

My dog started to do this after her vagina was removed. I'm probably outing myself as this is a rare procedure. She had an episiotomy (well she has had two due to a previous surgery) and I'm betting it itches her.

plinkyplonks · 21/02/2015 11:31

No I don't think so, my dog has had this before. Obviously not so pleasant for dog, so don't leave it too long though.

If your dog is due to be wormed anyway, I'd get some this weekend and see how the pooch goes. Best wormer we've used so far is Drontal Plus - gets the job done and tablets not too big compared to others we've used.
