Dog pulling on lead and stress signals

My 2 year old collie x pulls on the lead. I deal with this by stopping every time the lead goes taut and then setting off again. This usually works after a while, not always. He doesn't pull for my husband.
I have realised that each time I stop he is exhibiting stress signals: yawning, panting, licking lips. He is obviously not enjoying it. But I really want him to stop the pulling. He's a big dog. I thought eventually he might stop but my method is clearly not working. Plus I am worried he might snap if it is stressing him out.
Where do I go from here?

Lucky dog to have an owner who is noticing his stress signals and looking for an alternative training method - Im dashing off out but a few links below may help

Karen Pryor method

manner video

silky leash

If these are no good there are other methods you dog may prefer

I've switched to a Halti harness thing for our puppy who was pulling. It's a slight pita as you attach the lead in two places so need to use both hands to start with but it seems to have worked really well.
Especially with quite a few training treats for good walking for first walks. Smile
I now still use the harness and attach lead in the two places but use just one hand unless he starts to pull.
Good luck.
