Nickname for my dog

Can't get rid of the feeling that my dog's name is too big and formal for him (Lucas). Can you suggest a nickname or other name for him? Or reassure me that it's ok. Photos in my gallery - click on my Username. BTW the lady in the pic is not me.

Your user name isn't clickable for me, what about lou (the dog in cats and dogs is called lou)

Madamacadamia · 17/02/2015 20:48

Yes, I think Lou is good. Sorry about the photos, will try to get them on here.

I think Lucas really suits him personally.

lemisscared · 17/02/2015 22:30

oooh he looks a lot like my lenny

Yes he does. Is Lenny a breed? Lucas is a rescue dog, I always thought mongrel with some Collie.

VeryStressedMum · 17/02/2015 23:12

I can't see the pic on my phone, but I'd call him Lookie Smile

lemisscared · 18/02/2015 21:31

Lenny is a rescue too, but he is on the smaller side - I think he has patterdale terrier (i think your boy does too) in there somewhere and he looks alot like a "feist terrier" but that isn't an official breed. Lenny came from the dogs trust but was sent over from northern ireland so small terrier types are very common. If i had to pick a mix for Lucas i'd pick - patterdale, jack russel, maybe some border terrrier, possibly staffie and at a push collie. Whatever he is, he is gorgeous :)

TheFantasticMrsFox · 19/02/2015 18:06

I think NNs just happen though don't they, rather than you making a conscious decision?
DDog3 gets called "Pig" because she snorts and snuffles when she's asleep. TBH it does suit her, and she answers to it beautifully but it's not something I would have chosen over her "real" name.

In your situation I would simply shorten his name and see where it ends up :)

Gymbob · 19/02/2015 19:03

Lucas is fine as it is. dogs should have a two syllable name so when you call their name they are sure to hear it. one syllable isn't enough.

lemisscared · 19/02/2015 19:21

that would explain why my Bob has such lousy recall - even when i screeech Booooooob!! at the top of my lungs. Oblivious! HmmBlush

Madamacadamia · 19/02/2015 21:05

Yes Gymbob I chose 'Lucas' purely on practical grounds, plus it's a nice name in itself, and very easy to say/shout. Guess I will stick with it.

Stick with Lucas or go for Lukey for ease of calling. Lou doesn't seem right for a dog!

SistersOfPercy · 22/02/2015 00:23

Mine is affectionately known as moo poo, moomin, moomin troll and Jeff.

He's called Murphy which became Murphy moo and evolved. Jeff however it's my adult sons doing as he thinks we should have called him that. Daft dog answers to any of the above.

Lucas here would probably also end up lukey loo, lu lu etc.

Madamacadamia · 22/02/2015 16:29

Lukey is coming out quite naturally now, can also see Loulou, Lukeylou etc. coming along soon. Keeping Lucas for outside.

You tend to find yourself shouting random nonsense after a while Grin

My last Scottie was Jack and he was mostly known as 'cracker', as in cracker jack. I was devastated when he died. Just before Christmas Radley released a limited Christmas shopping bag with a Scottie cartoon on the side and the word 'cracker' underneath it. Of course I bought it and then sobbed my heart out when it came.

I think Murphy is called everything but his name tbh, they do kind of grow into their nicknames.

Adarajames · 23/02/2015 01:07

One of mine answers to demon dog even though her name is rosie, I don't need to explain why I'm sure!

She does also respond (most of the time!) to her own name and variations such as Posie

Madamacadamia · 25/02/2015 01:21

We had a cat called Timothy, who pretty soon became Timmy, Timbo, Timbeline, etc. Smile

DonttouchthatLarry · 25/02/2015 01:34

One of our dogs is called Quincy, which evolved through Quinky and Winky to Winkie Woo or Winks (and he answers to those!).

I used to have a cat called Hobbes (after the cartoon tiger) which eventually became Hobbernobberdibdobbs or Dibs for short (I know, I know Blush) and know someone whose cat Podge ended up as Jim Hartley Wibbitles!

These things tend to just come out, so Lucas could become anything! I do like the name Lucas and had Luca shortlisted for one of mine Smile
