Chappie dog meat?

I've had my wee babe at the vet today regarding him dribbling wee and I asked about his weight she didn't seem too concerned but said he could do with losing some and told me to feed him chappy as its low in fat!

Are there any other low fat dog meats dry and wet?

You could just exercise him a bit more and feed him a bit less...?

Unless there is a reason you can't like bad joints or something I cannot dathom the benefit in a low fat diet.

By the way, www.csjk9.co.uk do a herbal supplement called eezy Peezy for strengthening leaky bladders.
I find their products really good so might be a worth a try.

He only gets 2 little tins of ceaser a day mixed with a bit dry and he's walked at least 2 hours a day

He's a big boy anyway

Dogs are generally overweight from too much food, not enough exercise, just like us!

My younger one was hugely overweight when arrived as a rescue from Spain, I switched her to raw food, made sure she had plenty of exercise and counted all treats in her daily food. she easily lost the excess weight and is fit and slender now. I'd suggest switching to raw, or something a lot more decent than chappie at least, but keeping an eye on the portion sizes, and be aware of giving treats as they can add up quickly if pure in the habit of giving lots out. Make sure not to give human food as treats either as that can also add o he problem

I wonder if we have the same vet! My dog was on ceaser years ago and the vet said it was like giving your dog burger and chips every night. Recommended chappy and she's been great ever since!

Also, is he neutered? That slows the metabolic rate down so they need less food once they're done than before

Define big dog?
Because I can't imagine two Diddy little tins of chapped plus a bit of dry causing a 'big dog' to be overweight.
Especially if he's getting 2 hours of walks a day!
Are they offlead or gentle ambles next to you?
I have a large 15kg collie, if I walked her for two hours a day and fed her what you describe they'd be nothing left of her!!

I didn't think chappie was the best! But was what the vet recommended

He gets no human food at all he's got a really weak stomach and a lot of meat doesn't agree with him, when we got him he was fed on bakers dry food only

The ingredients in chappie are shite, but for some bizarre reason it seems to work really well for loads of dogs with sensitive tummies.

What breed is he?
As a PPP said, neutering can make it easier for them to gain weight but I
Just can't imagine him being overweight if he follows the regime you describe.
Does he have any other problems that might be causing the weight gain?

I think just try keeping him off the more processed foods, ceaser, bakers, pedigree chum etc and try on chappie or more natural/raw foods. I think chappie seems poor quality as it's cheap but many vets recommend it.

The vet recommended my Dad's German Shepherd go on Chappie when he kept getting the squits. It worked a treat. Vet said some foods have too many additives and are too rich for some dogs, and that Chappie is mostly offal.

Yes we were recommended chappie too, years ago, and it was very good for our GSD who had lots of GI problems

He's a yorkie and weighs 11kg but he's quite big in height (biggest yorkie I've seen and my mum bred them)

Oh and he was neutered at a year old, we only got him about 4mths ago we got him from an elderly lady who couldn't look after him any more

One of my dogs has a really irritable stomach and Chappie is the only one that he will eat and enjoy. Give it a go :)

My two dogs have Chappie too - a tin each per day - both about Cocker Spaniel size. Both have kept the same weight since they came to live with me two years ago, and one has a sensitive stomach if I give him anything else.

Millies Wolfheart do a low fat mix called Tracker Mix for off seasons and convalescence. Might be suitable, is mostly fish if he can eat that. If you go onto their facebook page, or phone you can ask for advice from Mark Milner who is very knowledgeable on dog food, they pride themselves on customer service and if Millie's isn't right for your dog he will tell you.

I haven't used Tracker but buy other varieties from them and they are excellent foods.

Butchers do a Lean and Tasty range that is low in fat. Ddog seems to prefer it to Chappies. Worth a try?

Chappie was brilliant for my old lab- gave her arthritic old hips a new lease of life. it also gave her diabolical minke whale breath
