Hi guys,

I posted on here the other week about my ill big dog. I'm pleased to say that she is doing amazingly well and is pretty much back to normal! No more huge vets bills and no more PTS discussions!

So now we have to manage her pancreatitis. Obviously the vet wants us to spend £4 per tin on their Royal Canin dog food or some equally expensive science plan alternative. But we simply cannot afford that. She needs three meals of a low fat feed a day now. I've been recommended cheap-as-chips chappie, but she has allergies so needs hypoallergenic food.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to feed her that won't break the bank? We currently have her on biscuit only as we found that if she was on meat, she'd fluctuate between her guts being "ok" to loose poop in the house and up the walls Sad Confused

Thanks in advance!

If you look onhere 3 come up as grain free and under 9% fat...but I don't know if that's the allergies or fat level you'd be looking at, so you'd be as well having a look yourself.

try the chappie and see.suits most dogs even those with allergies...

Alternatively try online shops for the prescription foods.

I wouldn't try chappie, the dry version doesn't have the same ingredients as the tinned sort and is mostly grain, which is a pretty common allergen for dogs.

Blimey, I didn't scroll down and see this thread, I've just posted about my dog having pancreatitis, although we are at the beginning of it all and the huge bills and PTS discussions are still on the cards.

I'll need to look at this food advice too but if you want to have a guest visit to my thread Lil I'd be pleased to hear all about it. (will try and find your previous thread too)

BurningBridges · 14/02/2015 12:17

Blimey again, found your previous thread and see you too are struggling with vet bill problems. We should be formally twinned.

BurningBridges I have a 9 year old Springer Spaniel who has pancreatitis,is blind and we have just found out that the poor thing now has chronic hepatitis.Over the years we have tried a few diets.
We had great results with CSJ senior/lite which is £20 for a 15kg bag.Fantastic dry food, very much in the James Wellbeloved and Burns camp but a fraction of the cost.It is 8% fat and wheat and gluten free. The only reason we changed from it is because millie has to be on a lot of meds for the rest of her life and we couldn't get it down her and she wouldn't eat it mixed in.
We then changed to Nature's Menu pouches which is like raw food but steam cooked. It is even lower in fat at 4% and Millie loves it plus I can mix in her meds and she wolfs it all down.PLease feel free to pm me if you would like any more info on the pancreatitis. We've been living with this for a few years now.

disorganisedmummy · 14/02/2015 18:27

I meant to add that the Nature's Menu does work out a little pricey at £1 a pouch and most medium sized dogs would have 2 pouches a day. That may not work for you with cost. But CSJ would be worth looking into and the customer service is fantastic.

Thanks for the info guys!
Disorganised, the CSJ looks fab. I think I'll be giving them a call tomorrow. I have now moved her onto the Burns as I think her ears are more itchy than normal (she always shakes her head, but it seems more frequent at the mo). I bought a small bag... £8 Shock to try her on because she can be a fussy eater. We also have a second dog who is really easy to feed. He had been eating the hypoallergenic stuff with her, but now that the feed is so much more specific and expensive, I think he can just eat the chappie... He seems to love it thankfully!

Waves at Burning Hi! Yeh, vets bills are C-Razy. What makes me mad is how much more expensive they are on weekends. Unfortunately I can't convince my dog not to be ill on a weekend Hmm... I also have horses too, so yeh, vet call out fees are crazy there too... How long has your dog had pancreatitis? Our big dog appears to be much better, although time will tell I guess! I will deff have a look at your thread and give you a wave on there. Maybe we could start a "reasonably priced veterinary surgery"? Although I don't wish to slag off vets - they do have it tough. My friend went through uni, did a crazy clever degree in animal medicine and science, but to become a registered veterinary nurse, she had to go through vet school, get a very low wage for a good two years Shock despite this amazing degree! The only way to get a decent wage is to become a vet and own your own practice.

Anyway, rant over! Better go and see to those ponies!
