Sounds a really silly question I know but i've just been thinking what my do would say about the food i give them. I do vary what they have from dry different variety's to tinned meat and sometimes our spag bol.

I feed raw because pizpup is a massive fusspot and rejected all packaged food to the point where he was underweight. He's even picky with the 'prepared' raw foods quite often. He gets chicken (on the bone, a wing or a drumstick) and occasionally my very own offal mix of heart, liver and kidney, also the occasional bit of tripe. I'd like to feed him a more varied diet but he's very healthy and the poos are brilliant - very small and hard.

I tell the vet he eats science plan as I was told off before and they always compliment me on how well he's doing on it!

nellieellie · 11/02/2015 10:02

Raw food, use the commercial ones which have some veg, Nutriment and Natural instinct, and things like chicken carcasses and ducks necks, raw eggs and yoghurt. He had runny poops and itchy on high quality dry food. Now fine. Previously uninterested in food, on raw, eats like a crazy dog.

FuckyNell · 11/02/2015 10:26

A mix of Orijen regional red and applaws. Ziwipeak too on extra flush months.

I use naturediet and applaws wet occasionally as a change

FuckyNell · 11/02/2015 10:27

Natures menu not naturediet

TheFantasticMrsFox · 11/02/2015 10:50

Burns Alert which is VAT free so comes in at about £35 for 10kg. That lasts our three about 3 weeks.

Raw feeding was great but is logistically difficult for us ATM. It was also almost impossible to keep the boys in good condition during the season when feeding raw alone.

Burns is the one food that suits all three really well and is not overly priced either.

TheFantasticMrsFox · 11/02/2015 10:50

Oops, £35 for 12 kg :)

ChangingItUp · 11/02/2015 10:57

There's no need to vary the diet buying different brands OP, in fact chopping and changing is likely to cause gastric upset. Dogs have very poorly developed taste sense, the most important things for a dog are smell and texture.

Branleuse · 11/02/2015 10:58

the working dog one from aldi, and an occasional tin of chum

They eat it, theyre happy, its cheap, they seem healthy

BearsAndAngels · 11/02/2015 11:34

Originally Eukanuba as our vet in US recommended it when we had our first dog 20 years ago.

With this dog, it never seemed to satisfy him (fill him up) so I switched to Orijen fish last summer after seeing some discussion on here as I thought a heavier protein base would be ore filling. It seemed to work and also our dog's coat came up beautifully glossy. He always gets a mini roast on Sunday lunch and leftover salmon skin.

Now he has developed a bladder problem which may be linked to his inability to process a diet rich in protein and certain minerals so he is on a completely exclusive diet of Royal Canin tinned prescription food for 6 weeks.

After that he will probably need to go on a specific food to manage it, but as yet I don't know what that will be.

fatherpeeweestairmaster · 11/02/2015 11:48

CSJ, another working dog food - with sardines/eggs/yoghurt/fish on top now and again for variation.

Be careful with letting dogs finish off human food like spag bol; onions, raisins, grapes, dark chocolate are all toxic for dogs and can result in some nasty Gastric Episodes.

Thank you for your wonderful advise Millie's Wolfheart kibble is the available in the uk??

OP posts:
MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 11/02/2015 14:18

It's made in the uk. Millie's Wolfheart.

EasyToEatTiger · 11/02/2015 16:52

We feed Burns which seems to do the trick. People are always right about their feeding regime. I noticed it years ago with horses. The oldest collie in UK lived to be 27 and was fed on a vegan diet of rice and lentils. Yum yum yum.

MarcoPoloCX · 11/02/2015 20:37

DIY raw mostly. Get meat chunks, offal and meaty bones from suppliers. Use the odd natural instinct completes every now and then.

GoodGirlGoneWrong · 13/02/2015 16:52

Csj for my 2! With raw chucked in every now and again. Can't beat a raw bone from the butchers (frozen). Sardines also every now and again (horrific farts) and eggs my dogs love eggs

Both seem to thrive on it, since swapping skin, fur, teeth have been loads better.

HicDraconis · 13/02/2015 18:56

Wellness Complete - dry kibble, grain free. They seem to like it.

insanityscratching · 14/02/2015 09:15

Eric's on mostly raw now as he does at least eat raw food and I'm on good terms with our butcher who gives me lots for nothing and charges pennies for the rest. I'm not evangelical though so he does get leftovers from us at times and very occasionally, much to his disgust, wet dog food.

TheKitchenWitch · 14/02/2015 16:55

Raw meat, bones, fruit and veg (both raw and cooked), raw eggs etc mixed with a few spoonfuls of rice, potatoes, oats.
We did pure raw and it just didn't suit them - they were hungry all the time, I couldn't give them enough meat to fill them up. And they both feast on apples etc when we're out (orchards).
It's been a long journey to get the right mix, but I think we're there now. They both look well, eat with gusto, no smelly breath any more, only 1 or 2 small poos a day, it's all good :)

HcachumBabow · 14/02/2015 17:05

The whippets get Millie's Woflheart countryside mix and Wainwrights grain free trays. They have just dry in the morning and dry & wet in the evening. Sometimes instead of the wet food they get raw eggs, tinned pilchards or dog-appropriate leftovers.

DDog2 gets a 50:50 mixture of MWH countryside mix and MWH salmon & veg, with the same wet food/added stuff as the whippets.

They all really enjoy their food and they've never looked as good on anything else.

NCIS · 15/02/2015 09:03

I use a mixture of Gentle dry and natural instinct raw complete. Seems to work, he prefers the raw but I use the dried too as it's easy to store. Gentle is a cold pressed food that I found at Discover dogs, had neve heard of it before.

VivaLeBeaver · 15/02/2015 09:09

Burns sensitive.

Tied better brands such as Millies Wolfheart but this is the only food she has firm poo with.

LividofLondinium · 15/02/2015 18:13

I used to feed my dogs dry as I though that was just what I was supposed to do. But then I heard about raw and that's what I've been feeding my Rottie for the past few years. I buy blocks of frozen meat and veg meals, in 6 varieties, plus boney carcasses for him to get hie jaws into. I must say he looks bloody good on it plus he rarely farts (only if he's scavenged too much fruit!) and his poos are smaller, firmer and less smelly than when he was on dry. Also, I take care not to eat much processed food myself, yet I was feeding my dogs processed!Blush I feel bad now that I fed them dry because it's so boring compared to what I feed pooch now, and god knows what's in it and what the long term effects of feeding kibble is. Processed is more convenient but raw was surprisingly easy.

financialwizard · 15/02/2015 18:19

I feed raw. The parents were both fed raw from a pup and were excellent examples of the breed and extremely healthy. That convinced me. Never tried it before but the pup is 7 months old now and lovely and healthy, beautiful coat, clean teeth.

Mominatrix · 15/02/2015 21:49

Raw feeder here. Started feeding the day we got our puppy as I had done loads of research and was convinced it was right for us and best for her health. We started with Natures Menu Puppy, and moved on from there. I mix Nutriment Complete formulas and DIY meals. Pupinatrix is happy and healthy with a luxurious coat, bright shiny teeth, and nice breath.

Florin · 16/02/2015 13:16

We feed raw. Started with natures menu complete raw food but now make it up ourselves and store as individual portions in the freezer so quite easy. Her coat is so shiny and teeth are beautifully clean and she never gets wind.
