Any Suffolk mumsnetters who know someone who has lost a chihuahua? We found a male chihuahua (or chihuahua cross) last night 9.45pm wandering in a field gateway between Otley and Monewden. No collar. Very friendly, very thin and with very long claws, seems to be house and lead trained.
We have taken him in, reported to police 101, who put us on to the 'dog warden' type service who have no reports of a lost dog fitting his description (but will get the district council to contact me tomorrow), have put his details on the Otley website and posters up at Otley village stores and other local village noticeboards. We have also put his details on Facebook and Lostdog.co.uk. If you know someone who has lost this dog, please ask them to contact me on here.

I will take him to the vet tomorrow to see if he is microchipped.

The lady at the village stores did say though that in the last year or so at least a dozen dogs seem to have been dumped locally - most have been found new homes in the village. How could someone dump a dog in the snow in the middle of winter?

Can you contact Doglost? www.doglost.co.uk. I see you've already done that. I hope someone comes for him soon. Well done you for taking him in.

Bumping for attention!

He is settling in well with us, has had a bath and likes his bed, has been for a walk (walks very well on a lead) and now that we have bought some wet dog food seems happy to eat it (didn't know what to do with the dry food that we feed our spaniel). Is currently curled up on my lap!

Maybe you've got a new dog? Grin

Was planning on getting another spaniel pup this year - not sure the chihuahua will be a working dog!

Where did you find him? Have you had him checked to see if he has a microchip, might be someone's pet. Good luck with him, love a Chihuahuas.

Have just finished work and we are off to the vet now to see if he is microchipped!

Did he have a chip OP ,or are you still the owner of a chihuahua ?

dottygamekeeper · 03/02/2015 23:28

He did have a chip, he was four years old and his name is Marley (my daughter had guessed that might be it as he seemed to respond to that name). The first name on the chip register came up with a blank, as it just had a mobile number that was no longer in service but did give us an address, so our vets started phoning round all the Ipswich vets local to that address, and came up with him registered to someone else. They rang her, she was very upset to hear he had been found (apparently dumped) because she had rehomed him to someone else, who had told her that he was dead!

She came to collect him, but I am still a little worried that he may need rehoming as she had indicated various reasons why she might find it difficult to have him back. Obviously our vets had to give him to her, as she is registered as the legal owner, but I did impress upon them to stress to her that if for any reason she decides she cannot keep him after all, we would be happy to have him. We are all missing him, even though we only had him for a couple of days as he was a great little character and very affectionate.

I do hope he is settling back down with his owner - I rang the vet again today to check that he had been collected OK and all was well, they told me that his owner had rung to say he was fine, so hopefully she will be able to keep him and give him a good life.

I am glad we found him when we did, as I think he might not have survived out in the open on Sunday night when it was very very cold here.

The moral of the story is, however, please do keep your contact details up to date if your dog is chipped, so that if it does stray/is stolen/dumped, you can be contacted and reunited. And also, if you rehome a dog, try to ensure it is to a responsible person who will not then dump it and lie to you about what has happened.

Oh dear , I'd keep an eye on the local dog selling sites she will probably try to sell him again .

When a vet scans the chip if there iso one, do they know which company it is with and find out who the owner is?

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 04/02/2015 12:34

Have you seen this?

It's a joke. It's standard practice to microchip an animal but not compulsory to scan for a chip. So many animals go missing and are never scanned.

There was a story recently about a lady who was phoned to say her dog's new owners wanted to change the details on the chip. She said the dog was stolen and she wanted it back! The new 'owners' refused to give it back. Apparently they'd had it for ages but when they first took it to the vets it was never scanned. I don't know what the outcome was but it perfectly highlighted how useless the legislation is.
