GSD Health Screening

On my local "Pets/Pets Accessories for Sale" type-group, a lady is advertising her "German Shepherd x Belgian Shepherd male puppies" for sale at £250.

I put up a link to GSD health screening and included quote saying health checks - hips scores etc - were very important. She has replied saying "neither of my dog have had hip scored and they are fine thank u very much"

Yes, I'm obviously an interfering busybody (and may get banned by the group!) but felt people should know... what do you think?

Completely agree with you but i feel you/we maybe farting in the face of thunder...

I agree, Team! Haha, "farting in the face of thunder" I like it Grin

Of course, they may be perfectly healthy pups and I'm sure she won't change her ways. No doubt she'll sell them at that (low) price, but it may make potential owners think twice and perhaps a few other people who look at the page...
but probably not.

I'd have asked more than that...I mean Belgian shepherds are nuts, lovely, but not exactly pet dog material for the uninitiated, so why? For starters...

There's a reason I don't go on groups like that, lol.

This post made me smile as I have the cross mentioned (well his dad was GSD and his mum a colliexbelgian)

He is the least healthy specimen of a dog I have ever seen. He has severe hip dysplasia, allergies and many many behavioural issues, he is neurotic and even the best dog trainer in the area has written him off. I didn't buy him and was given him but would never have paid money for a non health tested pup.

The idea that crossbreeds are healthy just because they are a cross is laughable and you are right- health tests are very important and my dog is living proof of that!

Some people will never learn though, just look at the non health tested 'designer' breeds. Good luck to whoever buys these puppies, hopefully they turn out better than mine!

I have been looking at GSD puppies and I'm finding it very hard to find a decent breeder that health tests anywhere...

tabula I'm certainly not thinking of buying one! I knew that if I put anything more than that, I'd probably get chucked off the group.

Unfortunately (and it's a sweeping generalisation, I know) people who buy through ads like that, are more interested in the price rather than any other factors.

I meant I'd be asking the breeder why, as in, WTF were you doing breeding that cross and just randomly advertising them on Facebook?

I mean un-healthtested crosses of two high drive breeds advertised cheap on Facebook isn't exactly going to attract dog savvy people is it?

I avoid most pet related pages on there because they are just full of back yard breeders and I would just get thrown out of them anyway.

I joined a few of these 'pets for sale' Facebook pages, just for a nosy. Every other ad is like this. I had to hide the posts, I could hardly stop myself from commenting. Quite apart from things like 'oh yes what the world really needs is another litter of mongrels' the temptation to link to dogs homes, dog baiting articles and health screening websites is too great and I'd get thrown off.

I got into a row once before with someone who'd bred two cross breeds to get a litter of four different breeds. I got thrown off the the thread but not before I got some back up. Then I got pm'd by the 'breeder', a really rude and nasty message. I forwarded it to the admin people and left it at that. Hopefully he got banned.
