Brings back memories of our last puppy - I remember sweeping the snow off the lawn so she could see the grass to have a wee on!

I'd start right away with recall - call his name in a high pitched voice to get his attention, and then use the command "come" and lots of praise and a little treat when he comes. It's a good habit to get into, and they are keen to please at this age.

Looks like a gorgeous pup - good luck!

Aw how gorgeous just like the andrex puppy! Dogs see training as fun if you're using treats and praise etc so just start with 5 minute sessions a few times a day. I would start straight away. Recall is the first thing we taught just make sure that he only gets treat and praise once you have a hold of his collar otherwise he'll learn to only come a certain distance and then go again. Sit is a handy one for him to learn so that he can do that instead of jumping up etc :)

JoffreyBaratheon · 30/01/2015 11:51

Our pup (now 5 months) went to puppy training and I was surprised that recall was actually the first thing taught - even before "Sit"! We used the command "What's this?" followed up by a treat and all the pups picked it up within five minutes. Much easier than teaching an older dog recall. Now, whatever she is doing in the garden or anywhere, a quick "What's this?" and her name, and she comes instantly. It's already got her away from a few tricky situations, too.

Aww, gorgeous! Grin

tabulahrasa · 30/01/2015 13:47

Pretty much straight away, if you can get the basics in their heads while they're tiny then you'll have an easier time of it when they get older.

JugglingLife · 30/01/2015 13:49

Doggy bells are fabulous for toilet training, our pup figured them out within the hour and still rings the bell to go out a year later.

Start training now but not in a formal way.

I never teach recall - it should just happen by the way you interact and play with your puppy so start now!

Everytime you say his name reward him.

If he comes close to you reward him( at this age he will not go away from you!)

Run away from him making a happy high pitched noise - he will chase you and reward when he gets to you.

Have a positive/happy zone around you where brilliant things happen, eg if he is near you play games, reward. _ If that is developed at this stage you will never ever have an issue with recall.

Introduce to the clicker - click and reward - with a goldie this will take about 3 times before they get it.

When he is happy that the clicker means good things if he sits click and treat.

Click and treat if he goes into his cage or bed or if he goes down click and treat do not introduce a word at this time.

Click and treat when he is calm

Also teach a positive interrupter make a noise that is easy to make a kissy or sound with your lips everytime you do it reward the puppy.

This is so useful in that you can prevent unwanted behaviour by making the noise and he will come bounding over to you for a treat. It can interrupt nipping, chewing or other mischief that puppies can get into.

Get him out and about for sensible and controlled socialisation before he has his jabs.

Play play and play with him - use tuggy toys , old stuffed socks or t towels you need to be the most fun thing he has ever meet - then many future problems will be prevented.

Enjoy him

Aww, gorgeous - our retriever is now 13 weeks....and so much bigger than when we bought her home a month ago (ish!)....take lots of photos!

I started immediately really - out every 20 mins or so, massive praise for a result - she's not had a poo accident since day 1; wee we're still working on but it's now v rare.

She learns really quickly - but also pushes her luck so I keep trying lots of small training bursts through the day. I'm also doing puppy classes which really help because I;m such a novice and don't really know what I'm doing!

Have fun!

As you were

TheHumancatapult · 31/01/2015 08:09

Thank you all for the hints .I just want to get it right for him he is a gorgeous little thing .May be all a bit smitten Grin

Toilet wise is going pretty good like you panicmode am out very regular though snow was ok the frozen slush he not impressed on..

Am glad my children that bit older now so have more time to work on its like having a toddler abet one with sharp teeth and nails .Though you can soon direct him towards his toys but feel like a pin cushion those teeth are sharp

Have the total recal book and what posted here am working on that but using a whistle .That way it can be consistent as only i'm doing at the moment instead of kids confusing him
clicker is out and am planning that today

muttynutty
unfortunately i cant get out at the moment as snow/ice and powerchair not mix but am planning get ds2 to carry him out and about later has had his first jabs and have second booked in

He's gorgeous! What's his name? Our lab boy is 8 months old and snoring on my feet.

tomandizzymum · 31/01/2015 16:58

Gorgeous!! I second take lots of pictures. Mine is 14 weeks and no longer that fat, fluffy little bundle. I've been blown away by how smart labs are, I had a collie before and this little guy is much quicker on the uptake. Enjoy

TheHumancatapult · 03/02/2015 20:09

he called Romeo was running through names before we collected him and as ds2 bit of a geek thought be funny to be able to yell where art thow Romeo .

He is gorgeous ( i may be biased ) but the peel your eyelids open and stand outside shivering at 3am is not so much fun

We should, possibly, be having a lab in a couple of months. This is a lovely thread! Smile
