What breed?

We are finally in a position to get a family dog, we both have experience of dogs, dh large gsd cross breeds and king charles spaniels. Me staffies. (Family dogs so first time being totally and utterly responsible)
We would love a gsd but upon googling i have starting twitching, so then i googled all sorts of breeds, always find someone who says 'consider a different breed'
So am i going to find that with every breed or is there a breed that is good for families?

Actually butthole, that was really the reason i started the thread... Wanting to know the pros/cons of each breed, things to watch, and if there was the holy grail, perfect breed for our family, but you have all answered my question really, it is more about the dog rather than the breed... Aside from the typical breed traits. I am very glad i asked, i feel much more equipped to make a decision.
I am utterly indecisive and sometimes terrible for over researching things, only to find I make the wrong decision anyway. Confused

Sassys pups are lovely, and will have been well socialised in their foster home. EGLR can homecheck anywhere, and I know one MNetter who adopted from them who was able to just do one trip.

Loathsome - whippets are gorgeous Smile dpuppy has a whippety mum and moves quite differently to ddog who is more greyhoundy saluki

Oooh it's so exciting!
Are you going to see the puppies?

I need to ring up later on, will keep you all posted!

A lurcher is a sighthound crossed with a working dog.... Sight hounds come in all shapes and sizes (and coats) - and of course working dogs do too - so there's a huge variety, all of which are technically mongrels even if they come under the lurcher 'banner' - it's certainly not a breed.

The fact that my dog doesn't look at sheep certainly doesn't mean she doesn't have high prey drive. I think it is probably because she was rigorously stock trained at some stage and learned that, if she looked at a sheep, something bad would happen. Now good things happen when she looks away from sheep (praise) so it's a bit different but still keeps up the 'don't look at sheep' Just need to extend it to 'horses don't want to play with you' now too... Blush

I have lots of lurcher friends who also have cats. But often, whilst they don't chase their own cats, they would still consider chasing strange cats - so beware!

Did you ring them

I am hoping DH has rung today, he is at work so haven't spoken to him yet.
The ladies are only available after 4 on weekdays and I haven't been able to get a minute to phone.
I tasked him with the job this morning!

Hi all, just came back to thank you all for some wonderful advice.
I don't want to out myself but we have successfully adopted a beautiful lurcher puppy and she is absolutely adorable. Such a wonderful gentle nature.

Thankyou all again Thanks
