A long way to go but still ....

Can't bring myself to click on the link. I detest the man for his cruelty and outmoded training methods, and can't understand why the tosspot is still getting publicity and airtime.

Lilcamper · 17/01/2015 14:32

Positive reinforcement works on people too. Donna Hill and Grisha Stewart have praised him Smile

Buttholelane · 17/01/2015 15:51

I actually like cesar.

I don't approve of the some of the things he does like flooding nor his use of shock collars as the dogs clearly look scared but at worst I think he is misinformed, not cruel.

He has a done a lot of good work regarding bsl and worked hard with death row dogs that no one else would touch.

He has listened to the research regarding positive reinforcement and started using clickers, can only get better.

I am so, so, so happy to see this.

We could really do with someone high profile publicly taking apart the concept of "cookie-pushing" now.

And all the reruns of the Dog Whisperer erased forever ...

But this is a fantastic start. :)

moosemama · 17/01/2015 18:10

I'm pleased he's done this and hope all the positive publicity he seems to be getting for it might actually make him realise the right way forward, but some of the comments on that page from people slating clicker training, when they clearly don't even begin to understand the concept are shocking. Sad

Nearasdammit · 17/01/2015 18:16

I suspect he's had to at least pretend to take a step towards positive training due to people starting to twig that his usual methods are barbaric.

I bet he'll use this as justification for kicking/using shock collars etc - "See? I do use positive reinforcement! I'm not completely ignorant of modern methods! But you can't use +R on red zone dogs....."

crapcrapcrapcarp · 17/01/2015 18:26

Yeah but if his followers take an interest in clicker training they're every chance that'll draw them in to more modern techniques online and in training classes.

crapcrapcrapcarp · 17/01/2015 18:26

*there's

muttynutty · 17/01/2015 19:22

He has really been forced (see what I did there!) to look at his training methods. National Geographic have dropped him, he has been banned from many European countries and book shops are not stocking his books.

Lets hope this does help to educate his followers.

We live I hope. Did you see the vid this week of the guy and the JRT with the horse shedding tool this week?!

muttynutty · 17/01/2015 19:34

No Lil was it good or bad?

Oh I know the one Lil. Victoria Stilwell did a frame by frame breakdown of it. He suffered a major backlash but then chucked the dummy (although to be fair apparently people were threatening him!). I couldn't watch it all, even being a tough thick skinned old boot, it was really unpleasant. But just misguided, which makes it even more sad.

There you go mutty. Some of the Facebook comments were ... well, you can imagine :(

muttynutty · 19/01/2015 17:04

Thanks Crap the video was blocked but the commentary spelled it out clearly Sad

It's a start and I'm so pleased to see it.

Some of his methods I do find abhorrent, but I can also step back enough to see that, whilst I don't like the faux science codswallop employed to back it up, he has a way of reaching people with his training. For example the calm assertive energy stuff is actually quite effective at getting people to stop flapping around and over stimulating their dogs. Giving it a silly name helps!

Whilst I definitely have wanted him to disappear under a rock before, now I am more of the view that ultimately it would be an amazing thing if he were to come around to R+ and help promote it. I'm very pro-professionalised science based dog training but that's not to deny that some people are born skilled dog handlers and I don't want to see these people knocked down for not having the knowledge to back up that talent - I want to see them built up with education.
