Pup jumped in the canal today

We were out for a walk, practising being off the lead, when pup (14 weeks) took a flying leap into the canal. Thankfully he has little legs and only ended up about a foot from the edge. My dad, without blinking, lay down and dragged him out (apparently the boxer I grew up with did it ALL the time).

My poor little one came out shivering. We took him home straight away, wrapped up in my coat. He seems ok now (3ish hours later), he's eaten, been to the toilet and is now having his normal afternoon nap.

Is there anything I should be worried about, or looking out for? Its safe to say he wont be off the lead again any time soon!

I don't understand - why would you not let him off the lead?

My dog jumps into water all the time - he loves swimming no matter how cold it is. Just make sure you've got a towel in the car and he'll be fine

Dogs can swim. They love to swim! What is the issue?

Mine did something similar when a puppy and absolutely panicked when she realised she couldnt get out (steep-sided banks) and I had to lie down to haul her out. From then on she only goes in water if she can walk into it, so you might find he's learned his lesson (unless he's a water dog!)

There was ice forming around the edge of the water and he wasn't swimming!

Well he's pribably learned to be wary of the canal in that case. You'd be doing him much more harm by keeping him on the lead just in case IMO

I don't know if he can swim or not, maybe it was just the temperature of the water but he certainly wasn't swimming today.

Sorry to hear about your pup. I have a pug too and they really feel the cold!

Noticed others have said all dogs can swim, I'm not sure too many pugs can due to their big chest bones so I'd keep an eye on him around water (obviously realise you weren't planning on the dip in the canal!).

Hope he's alright, eating is a good sign.

Just wanted to add my dog did this as a pup in winter. He only did it once and is much more cautious about water now although if does love to paddle.

The mobile mop submerses himself if there is water to be found today on our walk he did this in four separate lakes. Some dogs just love water even the freezing cold kind.

My dog did this when he was a puppy.. Problem was that there was a metre and a half drop to the water..
DP had to jump after him to get him out.
Having to take a bus back home with a smelly dp and smelly dog wasn't fun
