How big is your house/dog

We are looking into getting a dog next year. We have been planning it for years and feel that it's the right time for us as a family.
Slight sticking point is that me and DH can't agree on breed. I am not keen on small dogs, we have Golden retrievers when I was a child and also a Great Dane. DH had a Jack Russell and he doesn't like big dogs. He says our house is too small for a big dog. Our house is actually quite a large detached house with a decent size dining kitchen, large utility, playroom, big lounge and hallway the size of a small room. We also have a reasonable sizes garden, a park outside our front door and woods at the back.
I really want a Golden Retriever, I look at other breeds and think I've found one I would like by then I see a GR and that goes out of the window.
I think DH is just looking for an excuse but do you need a huge house for a big dog?

My friend was in a box standard 3 bed semi (tiny garden) with 2 rotties and 2 cockers. She now has 2 lurcher crosses and 2 cockers. Another friend in a 3 bed detached (larger garden) has 4 spaniels, 3 cockers and a lab.

House size is pretty irrelevant, although car size is worth checking out (first friend has 2 estates, 2nd has a working 'farm' L/rover)

You've got loads of room, I think temperament of the dog and how much exercise it needs are more important than the size of your house!
We have a 4 bed detached house with masses of outdoor space (not a stealth boast it's not our house Wink) and one jack Russell. Previous to that I lived in a tiny one bed cottage with a huge pointer.....but spent most of my time outdoors (outdoor job) so she got heaps of exercise. Grew up in a small council house with my family and two big labs and it never felt like there wasn't enough space.
I can sort of sympathise with your DH as I don't really like 'small' dogs but my DH came with the terrier and now I love her to bits! Maybe like others suggested a cocker would be a good compromise (and fwiw working cockers I've known are much nicer temperament than show cockers).

Thanks everyone
I have got a large 4x4 so car size not an issue either. I work from home ( 2-4 hours a day only) and DH so stiles works from home too. E walk quite a bit and DH runs too. With 2 active children as well the dog will get plenty of exercise. We used to have my mums GR to stay ( before DC) and DH says he felt she was too big and hairy, she was hairy I agree but we have all laminate floors and it was pretty easy to clean up after her.
I have looked at both Cocker Spaniels and Tollers ( never met a Toller in real life though) and they are lovely but then I come across a GR and fall in love!!
I'm probably being daft I know, there are lots of lovely breeds and mongrels out there.

Our dog lives in a Central london flat - he's a large labradoodle. He stays wherever we are (and usually follows from room to room!!) so I don't think the size of the house makes a difference, but whether you'll be able to give them proper exercise and so on!!!

I have a Bernese Mountain dog and while she takes up a fair amount of space, as long as her bed, food bowls etc aren't underfoot, the dog herself just seems to fit, even in smaller rooms.

I'm exactly the same with whippets. I love the idea of having something a bit more exotic with smaller classes at shows as well as whippets but then whenever it comes to actually getting a dog...... WHIPPETS!! Hmm Grin

From the sound of it you'd be able to give a GR a fabulous home.

I have a large greyhound and a lurcher (greyhound x staffy) in my two bed flat. Yeah, they take up a bit of space but not that much and, so long as they get out regularly, they just curl up in a corner and sleep!

Having said that, I've just put up a 7ft real Christmas tree and the living room is looking a bit crowded ??. If the tree gets knocked over I'll cry. It's taken me most of the night to get it up!

Our house is a new build three bed, only a lounge and kitchen diner downstairs. We have a MASSIVE greyhound. It's fine it really is. Get your big dog, you'll be fine!

TooOldForGlitter · 13/12/2014 21:03

Too many fines there...

We have a golden retriever, they are the best dogs in the world! We have a big house, but really a small one would be just as good for them.
GR's need a good walk or two each day, but when not out they're happy to just lollop about and snooze.
Just get one!
