The vet said today that his liver is knackered. He's put him on a hepatic diet but he won't touch the bloody stuff. He's eaten a mouthful and left it. He's had a mouthful of ham and a lick of some pate and that's more than he's eaten in the last few days. He had an anti-sickness injection this morning to keep it down.

The vet said if he's not eating by Saturday then we have to think about what's best for him because he hasn't eaten in days.

He's drinking still, so we've put a supplement in his water and mixed some of the wet food in it. He's not keen but he has had some.

What else can I try? The vet said if he eats the special diet it will support his liver and he'll be fine for a bit longer. He just needs to bloody eat!

If it's time, it's time. I had my 13yr old gsd pts on 8/4/12. Had her since she was an 11 week old pup. It came to the point where I was keeping her for me, not letting her go. Thankfully, I came to that realisation quite quickly and didn't prolong her frankly Shit 'life' - she couldn't hear a thing or walk much. No life, that.

Hope you can take the decision you need to when it is time. Feel for you x

Thank you all so much for your kind words, it means a lot being able to talk about it on here. Dh and I cry as soon as we look at each other.

We've just had the conversation about whether to phone the vet or not today. I said I think we know its time. I don't want to be the one that has to make that decision but I don't want to leave it to dh either, it's all kind of suddenly hit him and he's in absolute bits.

My beautiful boy.

:(

It sounds like his quality of life is slipping away. It's one of the hardest and most painful decisions to make, but your love for him will help you do what is right when the time comes.

Thinking of you x

Dh was worried about how ill he looked so we rang the vet. He said bring him straight down. When we got there he said he'd deteriorated a lot since he saw him on Friday. His liver was one massive hard lump, his breathing was rough, he could hardly walk this morning and he just didn't look very happy. He said we could hospitalise him and put him on a drip but there was no guarantee that he'd last much longer and it would be quite invasive. He said really the kindest thing would be to let him go so we did. We both cried there and then all the way home as well. Can't believe he's gone.

Thank you everyone for all your kind words of support.

So sorry to hear this. It's so hard, but it is the last kindness we do for our precious pets. We love them so much and they're with us for such a short time.

It's the one drawback to being a loving, caring dog owner.

Take it slowly. The pain will start to ease and one day you'll be able to look back and smile at all the happy memories you shared with your much loved boy.
