Is there such a thing as a lazy dog, like a greyhound, with good recall and good with children?

All in the title really - I'd just like a greyhound without the recall issues.

Sad NCIS that is so sad - I'm sorry to hear that.

Tooold - do you include labrador mixes in that (such as poodle cross?). I am so, so torn here. Where would you recommend finding a lurcher? I have looked at endless sites but many seem to taken already if they are children/cat friendly (we don't have a cat but neighbours do). If I am right in thinking a lurcher is anything with greyhound in it (bit confused actually as I read about a dog the other day described as 'lurcher (deerhound x saluki)' then what is best for it to be crossed with.

I think I'm going to end up with a labradoogreybeagle at this rate!

Lurchers are any Sighthound crossed with a working breed - so essentially a herding breed or terrier. Sighthound to Sighthound crosses are officially Longdogs, but the term is rarely used these days. Sighthound cross terriers are sometimes referred to as Whirriers! Grin

As first time Lurcher owners I would avoid anything with too much Saluki in. They are beautiful dogs, but fairly unique in their behaviour, independent, strong willed and recall is more likely to be an issue than with other sighthounds. Bedlington terrier crosses are gorgeous, but can have a stubborn streak a mile wide and are very lively as youngsters.

My boys (pics on profile page):

Lurcherboy - (the grey/blonde scruffy lad) Deerhound/Saluki x Greyhound (or poss Whippet as he has short legs for his mix) /Border Collie. He is an absolute sweetheart, gorgeous gentle nature, good recall (unless he's found something disgusting to roll in and he's only started doing that now he's hit the grand old age of 9). You wouldn't really know he has Saluki in him, but then it's only one of 4 breeds in his mix and clearly not dominant from his appearance (see profile pics).

Pip - (the red and white one) unknown mix as dumped at birth, but most likely a lot of Greyhound, with some Wheaten or Irish Terrier and some Border Collie. I would say he's probably multiple generation Lurcher to Lurcher cross, so no breed is particularly dominant. Again, he has a really sweet, gentle nature and excellent recall and he is really easy to train, whereas Lurcherboy, bless him, is not the sharpest tool in the box! Grin

As for where to get one. I would register with Lurcher Link and EGLR, then frequent the EGLR FB page and LL homeless hounds page and apply for anyt dog you feel may be suitable. LL will take your details and bear you in mind when/if any suitable dogs come up - not sure if that's how EGLR work, but do know they are careful to match the right dog to the right home, so you may have to wait for the right one to become available, but it will be worth it.

have you seen this lurcher with good recall

CMOTDibbler · 13/11/2014 22:29

RudePepper, have you asked about Lottie from EGLR? She is OK with cats, and young enough to recall train

These are my two - the white and tan is a failed hare courser, prob has a good amount of saluki. The blue has a whippety mum, vet thinks dad may be a doberman. Both soppy, but the white one is much more brainless

CMOT I have spoken to them and they didn't mention her. I think our house would be too noisy and busy from what they say in the description. She is lovely though Smile.

Viva he looks nice. I do wonder why she is getting rid of him rather than her other three dogs. When she says counter surfing - how bad are lurchers? Can you leave met cooking in a hot croc pot on the side - fruit out on table? (presumably not fruit?).

Thank you.

I used to have a greyhound who was a bad counter surfer. Stuff in a crock pot would have been fine and I think fruit on a table would have been fine.

Anything which smelt good wouldn't have been fine. Dh once got a pizza out the oven and put it on the worktop. Turned round to get cutlery out the drawer. Turned back and the pizza was gone.
