How to ensure the house doesn't smell of dog?

Is it inevitable or is there something magical I can do (other than regular vacuuming/cleaning?)

Sorry not read all replies but Yankee Candles wax tarts Smile
You'll need a burner for them too. I buy mine from Amazon

I have a very sensitive nose and swear my hose does not smell of dog.

First, I have a cockapoo and they are a crossbreed which does not seem to smell much. I have sniffed her fur and it really does dot have much of a doggy pong, Vet bedding in crate is washed once a week, her dog bed cover is washed once a week too. Floors hoovered every day (wood and tile), and tiles cleaned with a light bleach solution daily. She is bathed once a week because we go for a loNg mucky run together. If not bathed, then I use a dry shampoo.

I have short haired doggies but they moult so much I'm surprised they're not bald.

We also have marble floors, leather sofas, and keep bedroom doors shut so they're not in there with bedding. The back door is open for at least 5 hours a day in the week (5pm to 10pm) and most of the day at weekends.

My cleaners are in for 12 hours a week, 3 separate visits.

My big fluffy wool rugs get professionally cleaned once a month.

The dogs bedding (they hate their dog beds so sleep on a single bed in their own room) and their sheets and blankets get changed at least fortnightly I often forget

I have those airwick auto-wafters, one in the living room, one in the kitchen, one on the landing, and scented candles are lit most evenings.

I don't think it smells doggy, but I might be wrong.

Am pretty certain my house does not smell of dog. But then I am a clean freak. I asked my parents if it smells (they do not have dogs) and my mum would be pretty truthful they said no, it smells like it always smells - clean and nice. We have only had the dog since the beg of May so I think they would notice a difference if there was a smell.

She gets bathed regularly, but she isn't a big shaggy dog who likes to roll around outside.

I disagree that all dog owners houses smell of dog , I visit many houses a day as part of my job and not all doggy ones smell.
Ime labs and lab type dogs smell the most . My obsessively clean friends house still smells of her black lab.

None of the animals are allowed upstairs. Downstairs is wooden floor and tile in the kitchen. They're not allowed on the furniture and they're bedding is changed weekly. We Hoover 2 a day an wash the floors everyday. Windows are usually open and air fresheners are plugged in.

Windows open as much as possible. Leather sofa, regularly wiped down. Bedding regularly cleaned with bological powder and a hot wash.

They definitely do not all smell. I hate dog smell and found when we were house hunting that in some house the smell was practically seeping through the letterbox, but in others we were shocked to see a dog bowl in the kitchen as there wasn't any odour at all.

BerniceBroadside · 22/12/2014 20:58

Oh friend who has dogs and whose house doesn't smell washes and grooms her dogs frequently. She says this makes as much of a difference as cleaning the house/dog bedding.

Viewofthehills · 27/12/2014 09:10

According to a friend my dog smelled of dog until I started giving her raw food and now she doesn't smell anymore ( unless she is wet when she tends to smell like a wet wool jumper). She is also a cockatoo. We have been away with the dog for a week, so interested to see if I can smell dog in the house when I get home!

ScrummyPup · 27/12/2014 20:51

Viewofthehills~ - do you think she doesn't smell of dog as she is a bird? Or did you mean cockapoo? Grin

Is it OK to bath dogs a lot? I thought it ruined their coats.

RaspberrySnowCone · 27/12/2014 21:27

We have a mucky cocker spaniel and my house definitely pongs. We have carpets and he sleeps on the sofa. I have candles, Hoover every day, I put carpet moose on and frebreeze all the time etc but I'm sure I can still smell it. This weather doesn't help because we can't open the windows to get air through!

Viewofthehills · 28/12/2014 00:11

Definitely Cockapoo, sorry Grin

Some years ago we had a gerbil and I was paranoid about smell. Someone recommended this:

ratwarehouse.com/shop_detail.php?item=117&cat=5

Nilodor Tap a Drop. The bottle cost about the same then and it lasted for about 2 years. The gerbil was long dead and I'd got 2 dogs by then and it was still going. A couple of drops onto a cotton wool ball will neutralise odours throughout the house. I was absolutely amazed with it.

I've got a squirt bottle with water and a couple of drops of this in and I spray that on soft furnishings, the dogs bed and even the radiators so it emits a pleasant smell. I use the baby powder one, not tried other scents.

Still don't understand how it works but it really does.
