Where can I buy mail order rabbit (for dog to eat not a pet!!) on line?

Vet is insisting my dog try rabbit as he thinks dog is allergic to chicken. I don't want to spend £20 finding out he hates rabbit so I just want to order a reasonable amount of raw rabbit (pref. minced) that I can cook -assume this would arrive frozen in a bag Hmm

The only place I've found is Barf foods and apparently they mix bone with the rabbit. Is this a bad thing?

Why does it have to be rabbit? Confused there are loads of edible creatures that aren't chickens.

JustScreamNobHurts · 27/10/2014 23:22

The bone mixed in is a bad thing if you intend to cook it. Raw bone is fine and digestible.

You can buy rabbit at your butcher, but if your planning on just using the meat it will be a VERY expensive way to feed your dog.

Did the vet mean rabbit dog food instead? Like nature diet trays and the like.

Your vet seems weird.

You can also buy frozen, jointed rabbit in supermarkets. Try eating it yourself as well as giving it to the dog. Its delicious.

My dog is also raw fed. He hates rabbit. From chatting to friends I hear lots of theirs don't like rabbit. (Mines a greyhound, surely rabbit is the nosh of champions!). Mine prefers beef, tripe and fish. Chicken if he has to Grin

Barf foods is fine, get it from there. Do not cook it, there is no need

I'd change vets, what a strange thing to insist on.

Maybe vet not so daft... maybe suggested rabbit less likely to have been fed / injected hormones , antibiotics and other unatural stuff. Vet not great if not explained why but msybe onto summat if dog highly allergic to things. ... my dd reacted to chicken snd other meats because of that. Dogs cant go beggie like us so rabbit snother to try.

Echo others said just feed it raw and better its a proper rabbit rather than a dog food mix unless it states free from additives. Bones are more than fine as long as raw... as well as meat on bone cheaper than just meat.

There is a company in Abergavenny sometimes has rabbit but I can't remember name. .. but I did find it on googgle before. Failing that a butcher might have one.

Good luck in finding food dog ok with...

Sounds like a very expensive way to feed your dog. Is he supposed to eat rabbit and nothing else? There are loads of dog foods that don't have chicken, hypoallergenic ones like James Wellbeloved and for dogs who are allergic to a lot of things try Hills Science Plan.

Loads of places

I expect your vet is suggesting rabbit to work on an exclusion diet. Start with something your dog is not allergic too and then gradually reintroduce food to see which causes a problem.

Not unusual or weird at all but a sensible and recommended approach to work out allergies in animals without having to do expensive allergy tests.

JustScreamNobHurts · 28/10/2014 10:40

I meant weird in the lack of explanation sense.

Dancingyogi · 28/10/2014 13:13

Unless you are sure of your source either free range or wild, rabbits are so intensively reared it makes the battery cages used for chickens seem like palaces, not the image you get when you think about eating rabbit. Apparently there are very few regulations on farming rabbits.

NotOneThingbutAnother · 28/10/2014 23:18

thanks all - I think the vet is trying to put him on an exclusion diet. My dog is nearly 5 and I have tried a different food every few months since we got him, I'm pretty fed up of it. Everyone has ideas about what to feed but when he won't eat whatever it is they've suggested then they lose interest!

Natures Menu do a dry food which is Rabbit and Cranberry I think?
If it's an exclusion diet their bulk is made with sweet potato not grain and the meat is usually the primary ingredient.

Problem is most Rabbit dog food wet or raw is mixed with chicken or turkey.

CurlyWurlyCake · 29/10/2014 14:23

Are you feeding a raw food diet?

I can second the dog food company linked by muttynutty and also agree not to cook the rabbit.
