What is my dog's breed?

This is Charlie. He was sold to us as a cavalier King Charles spaniel, I have seen the papers for his mum and dad, however he's grown rather bigger than he was 'supposed' to! I'm not sure how easy it is to fake papers, but many people who meet him assume he's a springer spaniel so thought id ask for opinions from mumsnetters. Just a big cavalier or mixed with something else?

I met a large Cav just last week. Her owner told me she's a throw back to what the breed was like some 400 or so years ago and she certainly looks exactly like the Cavs you see in old paintings.

She's a medium sized dog quite sturdy looking and very beautiful but her muzzle is much more rounded than Charlie's.

What ever he is OP he's gorgeous.

Like a previous post we used Wisdom panel for our dog to have his DNA test done, we got this from Amazon. My friend is a vet and this is the test she recommended. He was a rescue and we had no idea what he was, photo attached and you will see what I mean!

It turns out he was a right mixture and the info we got in the breeds was fab, helped us alot with training etc for him so slightly different circumstances to you but the info emailed to us was 10 pages long and was fab. If you want to know what your dog is I highly recommend using this

Chasabeth Is Harvey from outside the UK?

I'm curious as Anatolian shepherds are very rare indeed in the UK, there were only 27 registered in the whole of 2013. They're much more common in the US where a lot of the recent breed development has gone on.

The list of breeds the Wisdom Panel can apparently detect was developed in the US and has a lot of breeds on which are either very rare or completely unheard of in the UK. It's pretty common for these breeds to turn up in dogs in the UK which makes me a bit suspicious as to how accurate the tests are.

In the picture of him standing, he looks very like my Welsh Springer, but the picture of him with the milk bottle, his eye is more prominent. In fact, someone once asked my if my dog was a cavalier, and this is a dog who's large enough to successfully counter surf!

Thanks for your replies everyone! I've been meaning to have a look for he pics of his mum and dads birth papers, will do it later when DD is in bed. They're definitely not KC papers though.

I wouldn't recommend any of the DNA tests. Several owners of a litter of lurcher pups did tests and the results came back differently for pups that were very obviously full siblings. They are a lovely idea but not reliable.

LoathsomeDrab - Funny you should say that, we rescued him from Greece. Didn't know that the Anatolian is from Turkey so may explain why he is half that, half Husky mix which includes German Short Haired Pointer and Afghan hound!

My friend who lives in Greece who helped us rescue him said there are a few Anatolians out there so that might explain it.

I've found the pics I took of the papers, the mum's actually is issued by the Kennel Club but the dad's is issued by 'The Dog Lovers UK Registration Club UK Ltd'. Can post the pics here if that would be ok?

Quick Google would suggest that the sire may not be a full breed in that case.

SpicyBear · 31/10/2014 13:36

From what I understand the Dog Lovers UK Registration Club is a completely bogus organisation where you can register non-KC reg dogs as pedigrees. It's purely to produce a shiny certificate to convince people to buy pups and not a reliable proof of pedigree.
