Behavioural help

My DM has a 4 year old terrier. This dog loves or hates other dogs. Today this resulted in the dog kicking off and being kicked by someone.
Ideas?

was you DM dog on lead?

First thing is that if it is unpredictable with other dogs always on lead. This can be a long line, so she can haul it back.

Second - could she get a behaviourist in, to help?

Wolfiefan · 23/10/2014 14:13

I have suggested a behaviourist. She did get one in when the dog was squeaking at night and keeping them awake.
I'm afraid dog was off lead playing with a friend. This is unusual. DM only lets her off when the coast is clear. This dog and owner kind of came out of the bushes unexpectedly.

If she's going to let him off at all he needs to be muzzled, full stop. It's not fair to other people's dogs as you can never be sure one won't appear.

Then enlist the help of an APBC behaviourist that uses only force free methods.

Then I think muzzled, Did he bite the other dog - Or just a lot of noise?

Wolfiefan · 23/10/2014 19:03

No biting. The dog barks a lot and goes in as if she will attack but I think it is more defensive.

God if I kicked every dog that did that to my dog, I would be kicking a lot of dogs! (My dog is huge a some little dogs take exception)

That's no excuse for you dm's dogs reaction and she needs to help it cope with these situations more appropriately, but I hate hearing that someone has kicked a dog in these circumstances.

Wolfiefan · 23/10/2014 20:08

It wasn't kicked once either. Bloke was horrid to my DM as well. Thing is the dog does look like it means it but has never actually bitten. Not sure what stops her though.
(Dog is lovely with people BTW)

To be clear I don't condone kicking the dog, but putting yourself in the position of the other owner, they have no idea that she won't actually bite. Not to mention if they have a fearful dog and she runs over aggressively, it could easily start a real fight or set back months of behavioural work.

Your dm's dog must have had a terrible fright. Something similar happened to me and our dog had a fright. I was shouted at and carried on with my walk. When i got back to the car, a policeman was waiting there for me Shock Shock. He said my dog had attacked the man so I said he'd had a fright. The man had tried to grab and kick my dog, which must have been even more alarming. In the end, the policeman said to watch out for this man as it seemed he was a trouble-maker. I have found distraction techniques really useful for most encounters, but people leaping out of bushes is not an easy situation.
