So we're looking into puppies just now. Would like a dog that's

  • a medium to large size,
-needs moderate exercise (probably manage around max 90 minutes a day spread over 2 long walks and a short walk plus obviously trips out to the garden), -shows affection and likes cuddles! (not bothered about whether they're a guard dog type or a i'll-be-friends-with-anyone-type we can deal with either)
  • is reasonably easy to train (we've had dogs in the family before but this one would be more my responsibility so I wouldn't say I'm experienced in training)
  • don't have kids or other animals but there are livestock fields, deer and rabbits around so I've heard that some breeds like whippets cannot be stopped once they decide to go after something. We'd like to avoid a breed that cannot be trained out of this habit (though obviously all dogs will like chasing things but I'd like to be able to let the dog off the lead some of the time)

So at the moment we're looking at adverts with Labradors, a large munsterlander x golden retriever, a Bullmastiff x Alsation/Collie or a Spaniel x Alsation.

Has anyone had any of these? What are they like and are their any other breeds that I should be looking out for?

[I feel like this post makes me sound clueless about dogs, I'm not honest! I just want to make sure I'm on the right track :)]

Those are some "interesting" crosses, do you have an interest in any of these breeds individually? I suppose the LM x GR isn't too bizarre (although I'm not sure what someone would be hoping to achieve with such a cross) but the others are very odd and I'd be highly suspicious of the motives of any breeder producing them.

With them being crosses of some fairly disparate breeds the puppies could end up being anywhere on a spectrum between either parents as far as breed traits go.

If you're not too set on a particular breed and are happy with crosses/mongrels then it's not difficult to find puppies in rescues.

Where are you looking exactly? I wouldn't get a 'pedigree' from someone posting ads on classified sites - any breeder worth their salt would have a waiting list before the pups were even born. If you want a medium/big dog and you like the idea of a munsterlander cross have a look at <a class="break-all" href="//bm.facebook.com/BlackRetrieverXRescue?_rdr" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">black retriever cross rescue

Mastiffs are dominate, even if a x breed they still inherit the dominance, they don't live long due to most of them getting cancer/ heart problems young. I've grown up with and owned mastiffs I really don't recommend them as a breed. They also don't get on with the same sex of their breed.

As said above, those are bizarre crosses and you won't know what you'll get from each breed in the cross. Who the heck crosses things like a spaniel with an alsation?!?!?!

If you are open to pretty much anything (as you post would suggest with the odd crosses that will have come from a back yard breeder/accidental mating no doubt) have a look at rescues and choose a dog you fall in love with that is assessed to suit you.

Asking what the above crosses are like isn't going to be very helpful to you purely due to the fact that they are crosses and could have bits of each breed in them, we don't know which bits in each dog

Out of curiosity on appearance, I've just googled a spaniel x alsation and did have a chuckle. Dog looks dip dyed! www.dogsblog.com/henry-87/
