Best baby carrier for dog walking with 1 year old

I have a dog who needs a lot of walking. We have recently moved to a new house where all the dog walks are along footpaths with stiles. I have an (almost) 1-year-old DS who loves being outside but is getting really uncomfortable in the Manduca baby carrier we have been using up until now on our walks. I don't have the option to take him in the pushchair as the paths wouldn't allow it. Can anyone recommend a carrier that is more suitable for babies/toddlers of this age please? I think my DS would be happier being carried on my back but then I'm not sure how to keep him dry because holding an umbrella over him would be more difficult. Any advice much appreciated please.

Have you tried the Manduca on your back before you buy a new one?

I have but I find it really difficult to get it onto my back on my own as DS is quite big and wriggly and I'm small and not very flexible!

Ah. There is a knack to it! You are probably going to have similar problems with a lot of slings. Not sure which you can clip a bigger child into before putting on.Smile

I feared that might be the case! Any tips for getting the manduca on your back more easily?

I've not seen the manduca in the flesh but it looks very similar to the ergo - I used to put dd on my hip and swivel it around to my back - once you get used to it you don't have to have it so far round so less swivelling involved iyswim

I put dd in an all-in-one waterproof when it was raining which seemed to work ok

I second trying to get him on your back in the Manduca. I used a connecta and a boba, which are similar. Watch some YouTube videos and practise with help first.

Have you looked around your area for a sling meet or sling library? They will have tips for getting the little one up on your back, as well as possibly having other carriers you can hire or borrow to try.

I use an ergo, btw, and it's similar to the manduca.

I have a Littlelife Cross Country backpack as I do a lot of walking/ hiking/ outdoorsy stuff with DS (now 2.5) he was about a year old when we got it and I love it.
It's well structured and padded, fully adjustable etc. Hardly use a pushchair, it's great for the beach, festivals etc as has storage space. Bit pricey but I have already had my moneys worth!
I can get it on myself as well, but appreciate that might be difficult for some.

It's a proper backpack though not a garrier

Def try a sling meet to see about getting baby onto your back.

I clip the waist on, do the shoulder straps up but loosen off the webbing, them Superman the child onto my back, flip the fabric between their legs and over their back. Put arms through the straps, give a little bounce to get child into the seat, tighten the straps and then do the chest clip.

I use a Boba 4G with my 15 month old, it's fab. Getting them up on you're back does have a knack to it, I just have the carrier waist belt fastened and in place and get him by the waist while he's facing the other way and sort of flip him over my shoulder, hold bum and then pull shoulder straps up.

Have use an Ergo and it was rubbish but like mei tais

You can get waterproof coats that go over both of you, but getting it on takes a bit of practice. I had a Kindercoat which I used a lot, but could never get the baby hood up by myself so just made sure dd had a (non-removable) hat and fleece jumper with hood. I'd second the sling library suggestion - you can try different things and they will also give tips on back carries.
