My waterproof from Millets let's water in and I get damp and cold!

What's good? I don't mind paying top dollar

I got my boots from Aldi, they're a mid calf 'yard boot' and they're fleece lined, lace up with a heavy sole so really grip well even in snow.
Waterproof trousers from trespass and my Barbour and a decent hat and I'm snug. I tend to run hot anyway so it's just keeping dry.

If it ain't Gore-tex it ain't worth it IMHO. In MANY years of getting pissed-down-on in the great british outdoors, it's the only thing that is properly waterproof and breathable. Accept no imitations. Oh, except for the North-Face-equivalent that they used to use for some reason - but I think they've started using Gore-Tex as well now.

SheenaWasAPunkRocker · 13/10/2014 16:23

I have this and rhapsodise about it every winter Grin

IDismyname · 13/10/2014 16:25

I wouldn't contemplate anything that wasn't breathable. I end up as wet inside as out if my coat doesn't breathe.

I have one of these: Coat

Its on its 4th winter and gets worn almost every day.

YY to a waxed cotton broad brimmed hat. Don't like hoods as they restrict my vision.

AlpacaLypse · 13/10/2014 16:37

Marking place. I need a new waterproof hat. My Tilley hat vanished last spring when I was sent flying by two Labradors and a Flat Coat Retreiver playing high speed hurtle with a very big stick. I was winded and disorientated for a couple of minutes, and I'm pretty certain the Flattie picked it up and ran off with it and dumped it in the scrub, she's got form for that sort of thing. I didn't notice I didn't have it for a little while, basically until it started raining again. But when I retraced my steps it had gone Sad. It had my name and address and phone number written in permanent marker inside and everything.

I have this (or the version from 4 years ago), have had two in about 25 years so worth every penny. Also have the shorter version but hardly wear that one.

I use it for walking the dog, riding, shopping/weekend stuff if it has been washed and isn't covered in horse/dog/mud.

Various boots - my old ugg brooks are still waterproof, chameau neoprene lined wellies, walking boots, ariat short riding boots.

I prefer my hood to a hat, have a nice wide brimmed thing but prefer this cool little number www.sealskinz.com/UK/hats/winter-hat-black

also their gloves, either riding ones or ultra grip ones.

I bought this last year:

www.cotswoldoutdoor.com/merrell-womens-ellenwood-insulated-jacket-2c120004?id_colour=124

I have it in a different colour, and also only paid half that price. Warm & waterproof, I lived in in most of the winter, not just for dog walking.

tabulahrasa · 13/10/2014 16:57

I don't need breathable (I didn't even check if it is) I'm cold blooded, hence the heated bodywarmer, lol.

Iheartautumn · 13/10/2014 19:59

Helly Hansen waterproof trousers
North Face jacket

Seasalt Northstar coat.
Is mid thigh length and slightly shaped via large poppers which let you pull in the back. Totally waterproof so far and also has some light wadding so good for all but the very coldest of days. Wear it for school run, but also smart enough for work.
And like the fact it is plain, not lairy patterns.

lampygirl · 13/10/2014 22:53

I like snow boots for walking in if it's mostly trail stuff. Usually waterproof but also fleecy lined. I'm on north face ones at the moment, when a pair get relegated from ski-wear duty they get used for dog walking.

Does anyone have any good glove recommendations?? I get really cold hands if they get damp so I get a but fed up of knitted/'soft' gloves but my big north face leather ones are overkill.

ShakyTheStork · 13/10/2014 22:59

I used to have waterproof trousers from the Army Surplus Store. Dead cheap but I did have to shorten them, i.e. chopped 3 inches off the legs.

I used gaiters a lot during my hill walking, dog walking days.

I have cats now, no waterproofs required!

TooOldForGlitter · 14/10/2014 20:58

I wish I could buy some of this stuff! I'd feel like a proper dog walker Grin

I am a weirdo tho, I don't feel the cold...ever...I can set out on a walk in my cheap old Regatta and asda wellies and beso hot ten minutes in that the coat is off and I'm walking in snow in a t-shirt. I know I know, I'm a freak!!

weaselwords · 16/10/2014 21:49

I'm fat and menopausal, so any exertion and I get so hot I turn rain to steam around me. This is the ONLY good thing about the menopause I have encountered so far.

IDismyname · 16/10/2014 23:17

Re keeping hands warm, I use fingerless gloves from Joules. Just picked up another pair from local garden centre at half price. They must be last years colours, but I'm not bothered!

tabulahrasa · 18/10/2014 11:33

Spiderlight - Picked up my jacket yesterday...and ok I've only worn it in light rain, but so far it's warm and dry, warmer than my last jacket and nicer too.

Thanks

Ha, ha! This is me! Grin Went for a lovely two hour walk across the fields with my two yesterday. Made the mistake of wearing my bodywarmer, although with only a thin t'shirt material long-sleeve top underneath and by about half an hour in I ended up resembling something akin to a lardy lobster - if there were such a thing. Blush Surely I shouldn't be overheating in October! Shock
