Dog insurance - who would you recommend?

We use Tesco - have all insurance with them so was easiest to do, but I've never had to claim so I don't actually know if they're any good or not.

Would anyone who has had to claim be able to suggest/recommend providers? A friend has just got a (seemingly) healthy dog and is looking to insure.

Have searched and old threads seem to go for PetPlan as vets prefer to deal with them directly, but perhaps that's changed.

Many thanks Smile.

Watch out for small print. Animal Friends for example have a lot of very sneaky exclusions - such as limits on the amount they will pay out for blood tests or refusing to pay out-of-hours fees

We are with Argos and have their platinum cover.

You're right Tooold - I often end up doing/buying nothing after I read reviews!

Another friend has recommended M&S, then when I mentioned that on FB, someone else said they were awful . . .

I'm just going to print out the thread and not get involved (but I am wondering whether I should stay with Tesco or move . . .).

Claimed a lot from Tesco Dog Insurance this year - no problem at all. I don't know if they would of hiked the premium as my dog died. New dog is under More Than as I already have a couple of policies with them and it worked out best value on price comparison.

Claimed a lot from More Than Car Insurance last year - no problem at all. Premium didn't jump up, stayed with them as still the most reasonable.

Watch your excess value - Tesco worked out the least. Also watch your max payout. I thought 3k was more than enough, but with my last dog who was being diagnosed with cancer, the tests came to almost that much and if it had been treatable there would of been very little to nothing left to cover treatment. I had taken out insurance so I wouldn't have to worry about money as well as a sick dog, but found I was worrying as the costs mounted up. I've gone for 3k again for 2 year old dog, but will increase to 7k in a couple of years.

I use sainsburys for all of mine, when my girl needed treatment for a slashed paw (some idiot smashed a glass bottle in the middle of a fieldAngry) they paid out very quickly, were very helpful and it was a easy process.

I've claimed three times for my cats on Tesco insurance with no problems at all. Premiums have gone up by about 50% over 6 years (from £20-£30ish) but I've claimed around £4k.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 13/10/2014 09:28

My mum had an awful experience with animal friends firstly agreeing to pay for the op her dog needed then when she submitted the claim refusing to pay out, leaving her with a £2500 bill to pay.

shes now with direct line who have been brilliant and payed quickly the 2 times shes claimed.

my dog is insured with tesco and ive never had a problem.

my aunt has both her dogs with tesco and has claimed thousands of pounds last year, they payed out quickly and her premium has gone up by £12 per month which she felt was fair considering her dog will need medication for the rest of her life, which tesco will pay for.

chipsandpeas · 13/10/2014 09:29

im with more than and never had any probs claiming with them, cant comment on the premiums increasing yet as i wont know about that until next year

chipsandpeas · 13/10/2014 09:30

oh i should add i mean the premiums increasing due to claiming - dont know about that but over the few years ive had the policy its only went up about a tenner a year

tabulahrasa · 13/10/2014 09:40

To be fair, when I say mine have doubled...I've claimed £12 000 in 2 years and he has ongoing treatment that will still cost more than the insurance plus excess this year.

Even if he sees a vet for nothing else this year at all, I'll still be cheaper paying for insurance than his treatment.

Siarie · 13/10/2014 09:51

Petplan are the best IMO, one of my cats is only three and we've claimed twice with him. Once in the second year and once in the third. Not had preminums go up at all.

Even though we could afford to pay the vet bills without insurance its reassuring and takes away the consideration of whether the treatment is "worth it". A couple of weeks ago I was waiting at a vets and the lady before had a cat which she had to put down because she couldn't afford to do investigative work Sad.

ToadToast · 13/10/2014 12:19

Pet plan lifetime cover is great. Tbf all premiums will increase as your dog ages and if you claim. One of mine is £2020 per annum and despite the £90 excess and 15% of costs it is still a bargain for a dog who costs £800 at the vets monthly!

Still if I share that story your bills will all look better:)

Collaborate · 17/10/2014 13:27

We're on a waiting list for a soon to be born Lab. There seems to be such a wide range of policies. Does anyone have an idea what kind of premium I should expect to have to pay?

Thanks.
