Help friend is thinking about breeding her dog.

Dog is a x breed she doesn't know what of. Dog is a bitch and a very small breed. Friend has never bred dogs before and is thinking of doing this because her partner say breeding her will calm her down.

I told friend that having her spayed will calm her down but friend thinks that if you spay without a litter being produced then dog will be hyper active.

I told her that if dog is pg her insurance is void and she will have to pay any vet costs incurred. I also told her that if dog needs a csec its about £2000 and she will have to pay that.

She said she will think about it some more. Can people give me other negatives of dog breeding to throw up for if she decides to go with breeding?

The only thing guaranteed to calm a dog down is training.
Is she prepared to lose the bitch, all the puppies and have a bill of £2000. It is rare, but it does happen.
That aside from needing to give up 8 weeks of her life and maybe not finding homes for the puppies.

I would make an appointment at the local vets for a chat and take friend and her dog.
Get the vet to tell her the facts.

There are enough unwanted dogs in rescues. Please don't let your friend add to their number. Her logic is bonkers.

I intend on doing my best I know her logic is stupid. I hope she listens to me.

As a vet I have spent far to much of my life doing emergency ceasars at 2am on dogs that never should of been in pup! And not always happy endings dispite us trying our hardest. The facts are, neutering may help calm bitch, it will def not make her hyperactive.. And will protect her from breast cancer, womb infections and a whole host of other stuff... Defiantly get her to speak to her vet Smile

I agree that having puppies for the sake of it isn't a good enough reason. I know plenty of bitches that have been speyed without producing a litter first. (I will keep my opinions about speying versus simply not letting them get pg to myself!).
I had a pure bred working springer from an amazing line that people were clamouring to have puppies from. She had to have a c-section (which was only about £270 versus your suggested £2k Hmm) and due to complications I had to bottle feed (or hold them one at a time to their mother) 9 puppies pretty much constantly until she was able to feed them herself. A couple of months later she died due to an infection causes by the c section (but not before spending a week at the vets costing me £780!). I was devastated and had a massive bill for a dead dog.
Does your friend realise that there is a very real risk of losing her dog and the puppies? Has she found homes for them? Is she willing to stump up the initial expense of chipping and injections? Is she willing to potentially end up with a litter of puppies that nobody wants?
