Dog being bloody stubborn

Back in May we bought a lovely little dog (she will be two next week), her original family unit broke down and they were no longer able to keep her, owners contacted the breeder and she took her back.

From day one of bringing her home here, it is like she has always been here, just settled in so well, everyone loves her, she loves everyone. She had been well looked after (which breaks my heart for the other family), lovely manners, waits for her food, house trained, goes to bed in the utility room no problem, loves going out for walks. When I say loves...she did until about three weeks ago. This is my problem, we have stand offs in the street. She just won't bloody well budge, I am constantly putting my hand on her behind and shoving (gently) her along. Anyone watching out of their windows will probably be killing themselves with laughter. She does it with my teen boys too.

She hid behind the chair this morning when she saw me bringing her harness in. Now I know it is pissing down with rain outside but she still needs to go out. Btw she didn't know it was raining, when she went out in the garden first thing it was still dry then. But even if it is nice dry weather, she still doesn't want to go. She has a coat which keeps her dry so I really have no idea why she is being like this. I really enjoy taking her out but this is just making me miserable.

She has no problem with other dogs, they don't have a problem with her so am just not sure what her problem is.

Does anyone else have experience of this?

My dog doesn't like long walks and I agree on it being amusing to passers by when I'm dragging her along, but she has a history of never having being walked, so isn't used to it. I used to run with her but I've given up as I do my run in half the time when I am not dragging her along.

Rain is harsh on dog's sensitive hearing so I totally understand why she may not want to go in the rain.

But, her suddenly not liking walks is strange. It could be something totally unsaleable to humans, she could have smelt something on her last walk that made her fearful, or, did anything happen, a larger dog bark at her or she was frightened by a bin truck/bus/horse/child making noise?Anything?

Could there by a physical reason? Not to alarm you but it might be an idea to take her to the vet for a check up just in case something is causing her pain or she's under the weather with something.

I don't think dogs are stubborn just for the sake of being awkward (unlike toddlers Smile).
Could she be in pain, hip or paw problem? If she runs around OK in the garden then unlikely.
Something may have spooked her, a big scary dog barking/looking at her funny, flappy thing on wall, or a sudden loud noise that she now associated with walking that particular route....have you tried driving somewhere different to see how she behaves walking in a new area?
If all else fails you could try taking an exciting new toy (kept just for walks) or special food treat and use it to reward her for walking a few steps then gradually increase amount of walking before reward given.

I would also get her checked out just to check there is no joint problem for example.

However you have my sympathy. I have a lab who sits down & won't budge if anyone is coming up behing him because he may get treats/attention (small village with lots of dog-lovers). He has been known to go bum down if I have planned to go left at a corner and he would rather go right. His paws get wedged against the door jamb if we should dare to suggest a walk in pouring rain (think they can smell it before door open). Sometimes he'll lie down mid-walk outside the house of a favourite doggie friend and I'm standing there like a complete lemon. But in all others ways so well behaved and soft. He's never been big on walks (never excited by the sight of his lead), preferring to play in the garden or go in the car somewhere exciting.

We did see her first horse a couple of weeks back, didn't seem to bother her.

However we did come face to face with a dog (think it may have been a lab x), it rounded the corner as we walked up the snicket which leads on to our street. The owner had trouble with it, as soon as it saw us we saw its teeth. We stood to one side to let her pass. She said "I am really sorry he will bark and he will lunge", which he did. She had trouble holding him. She held him by the lead but near the collar so there was excess lead which was like a thick twisted rope. She then hit the dog in the side with the excess. I was like Shock. I wished I'd have said something to her. Who the hell hits their dog?

She can run for England when she has her teddy in her mouth and she wants you to play with her, she is like a little warthog going at 90 miles per hour.

Haven't taken her in the car to somewhere different to go for a walk, but that is a really good idea. Will try that.

I will try the different place, take some chicken on a normal walk and a toy if all that fails, I will make an appt for the vets.

If you know any friendly dogs it might be worth having some playdates, maybe just one smallish dog at first to see how it goes. Just in case she's decided that all other dogs are nasty so she'll stay indoors to be safe Smile.

She does have a doggy friend ender, - a springer spaniel. They adore each other and often play together and go walking on/off lead together. She sees him a few times a week (DS2 is friends with the teen son).
