Our 15 week border collie pup is a delight apart from pooing a lot. She had colitis and had antibiotics for 2 weeks and we changed her food. She is still pooing 8-10 times per day and some are solid, some less so.She has got slightly better but we are still up twice a night as she needs a poo. We feed her three meals of dry food -80grams each at 6am,2pm and 6pm. Can anyone advice what i am doing wrong? I cant feed her any earlier than 2pm due to working.

What food are you using?

meandmygirl1 · 29/09/2014 19:06

It is a dry food mix from local pet shop. Recommended due to her colitis.

It is their own mixture so not a branded one

How long has she been on the new food? Colitis can take a while to settle, my lab x collie had it very bad as a pup and it took us a long time to find a food that settled it.

A friend who has switched to raw feeding for her cavaliers is delighted they poo less as a consequence.

Might be worth a try?

meandmygirl1 · 29/09/2014 20:04

Thank you for advice. Am scared to change her food again incase worse!! Do u think worth going to vet for advice?

Vets aren't nutritionists.

Has she been checked for giardia? We find a lot of puppies with diarrhoea have this. It is an intestinal parasite cases diarrhoea, tummy rumblings and wind.

meandmygirl1 · 29/09/2014 20:21

Ok any ideas?

Always try a new food for at least 2 weeks as it can take that long for things to settle down, the only food that really helped my dog was chappie, was recommended by my vet.

meandmygirl1 · 29/09/2014 20:54

Chappie was mentioned by a few people thanku

Just to update we been at vet and she has to get medicine syringes for next 3 days which they are hoping will clear it up. Otherwise stool sample to be sent away

My dalmatian has colitis, the only thing that stops him pooing several times a day was switching to raw. I don't do it "properly" though, I just feed the frozen blocks on mince you can buy at any pet shop.

We still get up to 2/3 poos per walk, so at least 6 poos per day but it is much better consistency and he doesn't suffer with the awful gurgling stomach that used to make him so uncomfortable.

I struggled to find the right food for my collie, Skinners was OK but Genesis has been brilliant. It is twice the price of Skinners but I use much less so it actually works out as better value.

The poos are just so much easier to pick up!!

AcrossthePond55 · 03/10/2014 03:25

Better quality food = less poos. We've always fed Hill's Science Diet to our dogs and it's seemed to keep poos to a minimum (2 - 3 per day) because it has less indigestible bulk in it.

meandmygirl1 · 05/10/2014 21:21

Down to 6 poos a day now and she is sleeping now through the night!! Smile

I have a collie he pooed loads too. He also gets an upset stomach rather easily but we feed dry chappie and he now poos about 2/3 times a day instead of his 5/6 before. I think it might be a breed thing maybe?
