A bit worried

Next door neighbour had two dogs. She kept one tethered at the back (a lassie dog) and one tethered at the front (a patterdale) They slept in separate sheds and so never saw each other. I have never seen her walk the collie but she walks the terrier most days I think.
The collie has died and the terrier is ill and the vet suspects poisoning. I'm so worried for Eric although he has a totally different life to neighbour's dog in so far as he lives inside and he is walked regularly and doesn't really use the garden apart from guarding me when I put out the washing.
I feel neurotic that someone could throw something over the fence that Eric could eat and I check regularly.
I can't think why anyone would target NDN's dogs (although they barked a fair bit) and so I worry more that it is someone with a hatred of dogs which could make Eric a target.
What should I look out for and what can I do other than keep checking the garden?

Why does the vet think it is poisoning?

Also poisoning can be caused by things normally in the house and garden - I had to get some plants that were toxic to dogs removed from my garden. Also slug pellets are lethal - and indoors, raisins, grapes, onions, chocolate etc - so it may not be something that a malevolent person has thrown over the fence?

I do understand why you are worried though

Well I think it was because they are both youngish dogs who were fit and well and then one died suddenly and the second is very ill. Neither of them come into contact with the other, neither of them go in the house, the one that died wasn't walked. Neither of them had access to the gardens they both have a shed and a paved area. Really sad lives if you ask me.
The vet suspected poisoning and because of how they live then the neighbour felt that it had to have come from over the fence. I'm continuing to check the garden because I feel better knowing I've checked before Eric goes out.
If it has come over the fence then I'd guess it's come from someone an evil sod who was sick of the barking which should mean Eric wouldn't be targeted as he only barks if someone knocks on the door

Those do sound like sad lives - why do people keep dogs in those conditions!

Well I guess it pays to be vigilant. Not nice for you though worrying about what might be.

And if an evil sod was behind it I hope that something stomach curdling awful happens to them!
