Do you give your dog raw bones to chew on?

We picked up some belly pork from our butcher yesterday. He had deboned it for us and had the bone set aside in a bag for our dog. We gave the dog this bone this evening which was huge, half the size of his head and he spent a very happy hour chewing on it.

It's now away for tomorrow evening but I am just wondering if it's advisable. It was raw so I think that's ok as long as it's too big for him to swallow and get stuck. Is that right?

mintysmum - if you follow vets advice make sure your pet insurance covers dental care. Chewing on hard bones can cause chipped and broken teeth.

Bones are fine for dogs, lamb ribs, chicken wings, chicken carcasses, heart, liver, tripe is wonderful for them. Sprats, sardines, eggs, all get scoffed within minutes. All raw, can serve frozen as well.

You have to take care not to give them large, weight bearing bones like a cow leg, for example, which can chip their teeth.

Most vets are anti raw feeding, and when you think that their nutrition training is usually very limited done by pet food companies, and they get money for selling artificial -junk--- food in their surgeries, then you'll begin to understand why! Pet food industry didn't exist 50 years ago, and on the whole, I think dogs were healthier!

Venison bones a favourite with out mutts. Saying that, the big one eats almost anything including the smaller ones shit so he's not prone to being fussy. Nutriment are very good, check out the website.
