Is there a 'middle ground' dog bed, price wise?

I was considering an Orvis bed until DP had his hours cut and my pay rise failed to materialise

Can't afford that now, but can anyone recommend a decent bed for a 36kg greyhound. He isn't happy with his duvet, constantly digging and scruffing it around. He does spend most of his time on the sofa but lately, with chilly mornings, I'm coming down to him buried in his rubbish duvet/blanket/bean bag makeshift bed. I can go to maybe fifty or sixty quid for something new and would be grateful for recommendations. Thank you Smile

Check out the House of Paws Arctic Snuggle Dog Bed -- it's around £40 and hopefully would be big enough for your greyhound! Looks so snuggly and warm.

Tuffies beds are supposed to be the next best thing in terms of comfort and quality.

I'm looking for a new bed for my two too and wondered about these dog sofas on Ebay but don't know how soft/deeply padded they would be.

We use memory foam offcuts inside these waterproof covers for our 2 large dogs. Vetbed on top which gets taken off in the day to protect it from wet muddy dogs.
The covers are easily wiped down.
You should be able to get cover, memory foam and vet bed for around £60.

Ebay :) It appears to have gone up but I got my greyhound a massive piece of 3" thick memory foam for £30 2yrs ago and it's still going strong.

My friend has a child's mattress for her greyhound, with a washable quilted cover that she made herself.

SnakeyMcBadass · 24/09/2014 09:11

Just bought a memory foam bed from PAH. The mattress was £30, a waterproof cover was £12 and then a fleecy, washable cover on top £12. Very happy with it so far.

Sofa style

Box mattress

Different sofa option

How tall is your lad?

Pip is just over 28" to the shoulder and roughly 28.5" long. The temporary bed I've made up for him out of old duvets and blankets is roughly 1.25m x 69 cm and there's plenty of room for him to stretch out on it.

I was looking online at the Pets At Home memory foam beds this morning - after seeing Snakey's post. They're enormous and seem to get good reviews, other than the cover being a bit thin. I think I'd probably source spare covers on ebay and/or use blankets anyway.

Can't make up my mind now - too many to choose from. Confused I have until payday to make up my mind! Grin

TooOldForGlitter · 24/09/2014 16:50

He is 34.5" to the shoulder and approx. 33" long...

I can't make my mind up either, just know that I am sick of seeing his scruffy makeshift bed!

Haven't looked at PAH yet. May have to have a scooch over there and see what is on offer Grin

The XXL memory foam ones in PAH seem good value. Some of the reviewers have put photos up with their dogs on them, which really helps give an idea of just how big they really are.

They're not the most stylish I've looked at, but am seriously tempted, based on reviews and price.

moosemama · 24/09/2014 17:14

Oh - and meant to say - your boy is eeenooormous! Grin

We have had so many dog beds over the years it is untrue.

Tuffies - didn't like eventually - went to a friend's house who walked our dog down a very wet track for a week and I couldn't get rid of the smell despite pressure washing and then even putting it in a friend's commercial washer as a last resort.

Orvis - inside of the one we had didn't wash ... and eventually it smelled of dog.

We had a House of Paws tweed one with padded sides which is OK as you can wash the whole thing and stick it in the dryer, this is currently our 'car bed' and lives in the back of the car.

Currently have a plastic oval bed from Amazon - nice bed, subtle chocolate brown with air holes in the bottom. I bought some memory foam and covered a piece in cordura to fit, then cut a quilt (3x thickness) to fit and made a pure wool cover - works really well and doesn't smell of dog after a few months (I vacuum it) - if it does I will wash the wool/quilt thing on a wool wash and see how it goes.

Also, just bought a K9 raised bed (camp bed type thing with a steel frame) with two covers (cordura) from Canine Concepts - for camping and to put in the utility room. Needs a fleece cover (which I will make) but I like it in principle. Too new to say.

lavendersun · 24/09/2014 21:16

Sorry - after all that - I reckon the plastic Amazon one would work with a duvet in it, and you can wash the duvet.

The camp bed was £50 for a Large - long lasting, replacement covers can be bought, you would just need to secure something cosy on it.

moosemama · 24/09/2014 21:27

The problem with plastic beds is that Lurchers and Greyhounds have very long backs. My boy is only 15 months old and has been waking us several times a night recently. We've now discovered this is because, despite having a huge plastic bed with a memory foam base, plus vet bedding, a single duvet and blankets he gets stiff from not being able to lie stretched out. Took away his plastic bed and made a makeshift one out of two old kingsized duvets, some vet bed and blankets and we haven't heard a peep out of him at night since.

They like to do something called roaching - which looks something like these pictures - or even more extreme in some cases. As you can see, they really need to be able to stretch out.

I've looked at the raised beds a few times, but am not sure how I'd attach something soft enough, especially as he's a typical bed-digger.

moosemama · 24/09/2014 21:35

I should add, those aren't my dogs - they're just quick internet grabs to demonstrate what roaching is.
