He doesn't want to play - he just want to rip the sofa, his bed, the cushions, my hair, my skin to pieces - a chew toy isn't enough...he's hyper alert, aggressively frisky and very hard to manage....for about 30-60mins a day. The rest of the time he's great....he's very Jekyll and Hyde.

It's just a stage, tell me please - he's a 4 month old whippet and particularly frisky today.

kennel them, actually only two of ours live in the house but if they act up they get kennelled.

Oh he's a tiny baby! 4 months!
Let him have anything you've got to go in the recycle bin. Cardboard, plastic bottles, whatever, let him make it more compact for the bin! And dash about in an enclosed space. Mine liked tug of war on the bed/chase the toy/hide and seek. Sometimes she works herself into a new level of madness and I cuddle her till she gets over it :D

EvenBetter · 16/09/2014 14:18

Is it at the witching hour near dusk?
He's growing rapidly, huge teeth developing, hormones changing, all sorts of mayhem happening inside, very quickly, puppies bite and they go crazy at points in the day. Give him stuff he can destroy and bite! and no! he won't still be doing it in a few months! but mine will still insist on getting flattened plastic bottles :D

Aww 4 months. Love to see them at that age, legs everywhere just hurtling about mindlessly because everything's exciting and new and they're just crazy and full of life.

Wonderful.

It will stop eventually OP. Meanwhile just enjoy it and wait till he hit adolescence.

Luxaroma · 16/09/2014 14:59

Cuddling at the end helps him come down from the madness. When does it end?

Tbh it's all a bit of blur in my memory - my dog is 3.5 years old now.

Hate to say this, because you sound a bit desperate:) but I don't think it does really, not until they get past adolescence at least, and even then it's often touch and go.

You just have to be strong OP. Read the other thread that's running on here about the awful things dogs do. It'll make you realise you're not alone.

It's their crazy ways that make us love them.

Luxaroma · 16/09/2014 15:47

Yep it's funny after the fact, dh loves the daily update to the dogs behaviour, he howls with laughter....pup is now on the sofa sleeping and he looks so god damn cute - he makes my heart melt every time.
It's those hyper alert ears and that mad look in his eye, I see them and I just want to run for the door.

Tearing up paper makes a great sound and is relatively inexpensive option!

mistlethrush · 17/09/2014 14:22

We had one that chased balloons - she could keep them up in the air for ages (and then it would drop and she would pounce and wonder where it had gone with the pop)

CrazyPuppy · 17/09/2014 16:15

Mine is 7 months and still a bit like this. Not sure if he is growing out of it or we are getting better at tolerating/managing it, but either way we are not tearing our hair out quite so much. He is no longer doing the wall of death round the living room every night anyway too busy chewing stuff
