What would happen if a dog swallowed a live mouse whole?

Sorry for disgusting thread title!

DDog is a golden retriever and twice now I've rescued live mice from his mouth. I'm pretty sure he thinks they're toys and he only seems to pick them up when he sees me coming to end his fun!

But with the last one I rescued he seemed to be making swallowing attempts as I got close and I'm just wondering whay would happen. Is it even possible?

Today's mouse seemed unharmed but very damp. Got dog inside and came out to mouse hopping towards the shed where the cat was lurking. Ended up getting it to hop into a box and released it in the field next door.

Ddog1 did exactly that as a six month old puppy, right in front of me and I wasn't quick enough to stop her. She didn't seem to suffer any ill effects at all and is a fit and healthy eight year old whereas I felt very queasy for 2 days and still can't get the horrible image out of my mind
The only fear would be if the mouse had been poisoned, but I am guessing you haven't been putting down poison around the house as you already have an effective mouse killer:)

Pinkje · 15/09/2014 17:18

Erm, the mouse would die.

CurlyWurlyCake · 15/09/2014 17:25

The mouse would die and the dogs stomach acid would break it down.

A few mouse a wek and the dogs poo will be firmer.

WestmorlandSausage · 15/09/2014 17:25

One of our dogs did this as a puppy but with a sparrow. Swallowed it live and whole Confused

Twas fine though.

Toooldtobearsed · 15/09/2014 17:28

Mine eats dead mice brought for him by cat.

He also ran through long grass ( his favourite on a walk) scaring up ground nesting birds. He caught one. And ate it.

He is raw fed...... Does them no harm, providing no poisons laid and they are regularly wormed.

Horrible to see though!

Lol

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 15/09/2014 18:37

Mine does this. I worry about poison so am a lot more successful now in convincing her that bonitos are better.

Although that does sometimes mean I am duty bound to quickly despatch poor mousie if she's already crunched Sad

HotPinkWeaselWearingLederhosen · 15/09/2014 18:38

BONIOS

MimsyBorogroves · 15/09/2014 18:39

Dog would then have to swallow a cat to catch the mouse...

(Sorry)

WaffleWiffle · 15/09/2014 18:53

My dog swallowed a still alive frog (that the cat has caught) when she was a youngster.

I found it revolting. No harm came to the dog though.

She has also finished half eaten mice caught by the cat too. Not a live mouse though - cat likes killing mice too much.

Toooldtobearsed · 15/09/2014 19:27

My chickens caught a frog. Watching two of them, with a leg each, fighting over it was stomach churning.
Who knew a frog could stretch so much?

Apologies, I am a frog lover, but this one was a goner.....

littlewhitebag · 16/09/2014 12:08

Mine ate a baby rabbit. I think it was probably dead by the time she gulped it down but it was alive when she caught it. She was fine.

giddly · 16/09/2014 12:55

Sorry but PMSL at "unharmed but very damp". I can imagine.

Helgathehairy · 16/09/2014 18:58

Well it's good to know he'd be ok. This is the 4th mouse we've saved in the last few weeks. Think we might be a little bit soft considering we live in the country.

My collie is partial to a whole live mouse... He has never been ill from it though.

Pufflemum · 24/09/2014 13:40

If it's anything like my cocker who did just this at 4 months, she will unknowingly swallow it alive then run around the kitchen looking for it for the next hour. No ill effects for the dog afterwards.

My German Shepherd caught a bird mid flight once and swallowed it whole. All was well... well not for the poor bird but the dog was fine.

I'm sorry to be boring, but many ground-nesting bird species are struggling at the moment. Please keep your dog on lead or under control where they're likely to be nesting from the beginning of March to the end of July.

I should imagine dog would be absolutely fine. Mouse would be an ex mouse.

I am frequently entertained by MN but I loved "Who knew a frog could stretch so much ?" It's had me chortling for ages.

BoobsOnTheChristmasTree · 12/12/2023 19:03

Dog will be fine. Mine does this every now and then, it makes me gag a bit but tbh it's better than when she cronches on them...

Would depend whether dog crunched it or swallowed it whole! I guess it could die of being crunched... or if just swallowed it would asphyxiate!

Passmethegin67 · 18/12/2023 15:07

My goldie caught two mice that had come into the house on separate occasions. One he dropped on command, thankfully it was dead by that point. The second he caught and took outside for me. I got pest control in after that and no longer have rodent visitors thankfully!
