Our lab went to the vets today, she appears to be having eyesight trouble which is worsening over the last few weeks. She doesn't seem to have any problems during the day, but once the light levels drop, she can't make her way across the garden without walking straight into objects. She only goes out for a pee at night if she's desperate and sometimes that involves a lot of encouragement to get her through the door! She has always been clumsy with poor spatial awareness, but I thought that was just her.

The vet said he couldn't see any obvious pathology so has referred her to an expert. I can't decide if this is good news (it's just a precautionary referral) or bad news (it's something far more complicated than he can deal with). She's only 2 years old!

Does anyone have any ideas? Or any experience of a poorly sighted dog?

Were her parents tested for PRA?

Yes they were both hip and eye tested with no problems.

Well if they've got a clear DNA test it can't be PRA then...which is the first thing that springs to mind with a lab and night vision problems.

I've nothing more to offer other than, I hope it goes well, I'm afraid.
