We have a 16 week old pointer x puppy. In most ways she has been amazing! Easy to train, great with our young children, loves other dogs and people. Honestly, I couldn't praise her temperament enough!

Our problem is night time. After her last toilet break she'll happily trot off to her crate and settle down, no whining or crying. She still wakes up between 2 & 3am and needs to go out. She will not go back to sleep! She tries to hide from us so she doesn't have to go back in her crate, when she's in she does that horrible yipping noise and she will not stop until she can get out. It's a real problem now, both DH & I have taken a real hit to our immune system with 7 weeks of broken sleep and our children are constantly grumpy with tiredness. I absolutely know it's a puppy thing and will eventually sort itself out but any expert advice would be sooooo welcome right now.

Yikes does she really need a toilet break in the middle of the night every night? Could she be trying it on? Eric hasn't been out in the middle of the night since he was eight weeks old. He's been going for twelve hours overnight (he's not crated) without being taken out since he was about your pup's age.
I wonder whether she would be happier and more able to sleep longer if she wasn't crated? Would she make a mess do you think?

She does wee every time but on occasion she has slept until 5ish so I know it can be done. She is fully house trained but the one time I didn't crate her whilst we were out for less than an hour she wee'd and pooed on the floor. I just have absolutely no idea what to do, all dogs I've ever had started in a crate and were fine with it at anytime!
