a lady we know knows of a beagle x collie that needs rehoming (people didn't research beagles!) and has put our names forward.
we have discussed getting ours a friend but i'm wondering if this is a silly idea?

anyone with two beagles?

We have one and my dad has one; they are lovely together. They absolutely adore each other (one male, one female) and amuse each other all day. Ours is currently staying with my dad for 2 weeks while we're on holiday. We would definitely get another if we had the room. They're both amazing with my 10mo DD too. Go for it Smile.

Sorry to crash but a Beagle is one f the breeds we are considering.
What are their negatives please?

guitarosauras · 09/09/2014 14:44

negatives are:
need loooong walks, hard to train (imo), dopey, scatty, bad recall, howling.

but they are fantastic family pets if you can put the time in!

Partner is having doubts which is making me think maybe now isn't the right time. Sad as she's perfect!

Ours is really easy to train but I don't know if that's typical! Negatives for me would be the howl, stubbornness and bad recall (if they get a scent of something they're gone!). However they are such lovely natured dogs that they are well worth it. Ours is 4 now and is fantastic, however the first year was pretty tough as he suffered from separation anxiety. He absolutely loves being around people.

Yep very silly idea if to get "your dog a friend" . He has you he is happy but if you want another dog that you can spend time with alongside your dog then go for it. Get the new dog for you not your existing dog. Your dog does not need a friend they would prefer more time with their owner than being left to amuse themselves with another dog.

(Although a beagle collie cross - are you sure? do you have an other interests apart from dog training and dog entertainment manager - that could be a full on crossSmile)

Grin at 'are you sure? do you have an other interests apart from dog training and dog entertainment manager - that could be a full on)'.

I mean dog company. She gets lots of attention and lots of long walks. She is alone while we're at work (we have a dog walker that comes twice a day while we're out).
It's more that as a pack dog do they not benefit from being with other dogs? or are we her pack?

Beagle x collie - would be a resounding NO from me! Two breeds that are quite difficult in their own ways (so I've heard) so a cross could be really high-maintenance.

YoureAllABunchOfBastards · 11/09/2014 20:58

We had two beagles. Oh my God they were hard work. Utterly gorgeous, but unable to be let off the lead, total scavengers, and the howling was something else.

When one died, the other became a much more settled dog - he howled a little, but was generally a cheerful boy. I do miss them but DH has sworn never again as they were so demanding.

My DS has two Beagles. They are 6 and7 and can't be let off the lead. They are lovely friendly dogs but also a bit of a nightmare. They went to a training centre for a month and when the time came for them to be picked up were asked if they could leave them another week as they weren't quite ready. The report they got at the end said that they used each other to avoid control.

deste · 11/09/2014 22:21

Also they would eat anything.

guitarosauras · 15/09/2014 12:51

Thankfully dp talked me out of it as well!
thanks all.

Seems like you are not going ahead so probably no need to add to this - but we've always had two dogs (different breeds) - and it is no more work than one.

guitarosauras · 15/09/2014 13:20

hmc- dooooooooooon't! I'm not allowed Grin
