My baby's limping and he looks miserable! :(

This feels like karma after ranting about him on here last night but my JRT has come home from 'granny's' house and he's limping. He stays with PIL most Saturday nights and we pick him up on Sunday afternoons. They love him, he loves them and it gets FIL out of the house (he cares for poorly MIL) so we're happy with the arrangement.

Anyway, DP went to get him earlier today and FIL says that he is limping but he's not sure what caused it. There was a bit of a ruckus when the dog went haring after someone else's golf ball and the extender lead went flying out of his hand. He doesn't know if the hard plastic handle hit the dog or if he maybe hurt himself with the sudden sprint, apparently it all happened in a matter of seconds. He started limping shortly after the incident and still won't put any weight on it, looking to me to lift him onto the couch, etc. He is letting me touch every part of his leg, I can extend it fully and press on it without showing any sign of pain but he ran through to another room and hopped on three legs the whole way. I asked him to sit and he slid both legs to one side before he did, so that he was sitting on one side of his bum, iykwim.

Basically, I'd just like some advice before I swaddle him up and sprint to the vet. Should I just keep an eye on him over the course of the next couple of days or should I make an appointment ASAP? The poor little mite looks miserable, though he is eating, drinking and grumbling at me as normal.

It could pano (growing pains our vet said) one of ours got a random limp we where given metacam to use for a few days and it cleared up nicely.

It's now four hours later and he's still not putting weight on it. He's being really sooky with me, wanting cuddles and he's dozing on and off on his blanket on the couch but he won't even put it down when sitting.

I'm so worried!

Bump - can anyone offer any wisdom? He still wouldn't put weight on it this morning, he's hopping around on three legs. He still doesn't seem to be in pain and he ate his breakfast as normal.

Do I just give it a couple of days? We're still not even sure what happened, FIL is really upset and says that he didn't see definitively what caused it.

Pano is a condition of big dogs, never report in jack Russell's.
If he is no bear weight on it he needs to see a vet. It old be several things.

I'd take him today ,my friend trod on her JRT ( accidentally) and broke his foot ,it's very easily done .

moosemama · 08/09/2014 14:42

Definitely get him to the vet asap. Any non-weight-bearing injury should be properly investigated as soon as possible really.

momnipotent · 08/09/2014 14:45

None weight-bearing I would be taking him right away.
Hope it is easily fixable and he is feeling better after a visit to the vet!

If it's his hind leg it could be luxating patella (I think that's the right spelling). The knee joint comes out of alignment and causes pain. It's common in JRTs and results in the "skipping" run that so many of them have. Our JRT had it as a young dog, though not severely. I used to gently massage the joint, which seemed to help. Eventually she grew out of it.

A visit to the vet would probably be best so that you can get a diagnosis.

cherrybombxo · 08/09/2014 16:58

Yes, that's what DP and I think it could be as he does skip when he runs. I felt both of his knees last night and he didn't even flinch, and they both felt the same. I'm obviously not a vet though, so I can't make any sort of diagnosis.

I think we'll see how he is in the morning and then phone the vet if need be.

Thanks for the replies!
